2013 VW Jetta TDI - Anybody have one?

I'm in the market for a "responsible" vehicle. 40+ MPG out of a decent sized car is hard to pass up. So does anyone have a newer TDI? Any gripes? How's the driveability/reliablity? Are they at all fun to drive? Also, I came across a '13 with 16,000 miles for under 18k, so I'm probably going to jump on it unless there are some horror stories out there.

I won't argue that. The 4x4 is squeezing the pocket book on long trips. Guess I gotta grow up somewhat. The TDI seems like a decent middle of the road.

I'd avoid this vehicle. Jetta's have horrible reliability issues.
If you plan on selling this vehicle after the factory warranty runs out then roll the dice. But, I would avoid owning a VW afterwards.

I have a 2012 Passat with 112k miles, no problems besides maintenance and get 46-47 mpg on average. These are hwy miles.

The diesels are fine.

Some people really like them.
With only 16K on the clock, you should still have some manufacturers warranty left.
Run the VIN through a VW dealer's service department.

This was my first thought and I agree.
I've heard the diesels are better, but I'd be leery.

I've never been able to get a straight answer on whether or not the Jetta TDI's are built in Mexico or not?

The body of ours was assembled in Mexico. Says it right on the door jamb. Not sure where the engine was built.

Don't know much about that car, but I just went from an fx4 with 325s to a mid sized sedan that gets 30mpg.
Do it.
Do it.

I don't think build location was the issue as much as it was the components VW was using.

2005 Jetta TDI 5MT Wagon. Bought new, 186k miles to date. Avg ~43 mpg. One 'unscheduled' maintenance since 3/05 -- fuel pump. Still on original clutch. Still runs strong. Pulls a pop up camper no problem (35+mpg while towing). 10k oil change interval.
I'll say that if you can find a car made in Germany then you're better off than a car made in Mexico. For example, 05 Jetta TDI Wagons were made in Germany, whereas sedans were made in Mexico.
My mom has a 06 Beetle TDI 6AT(hecho in Mexico). Same engine suspension etc. Different cars though.
Man that thing is a cheap POS on the inside. Fit and finish is poor compared to mine (lots of NVH). And the Jetta will beat it by at least 4 car lengths in the 1/8th mile.
:csb:
My Recommendation: if you want to own the car more than 5 years, stay away from automatic transmissions. Go with the 6 speed manual; get better performance, better control, and much lower cost of ownership as compared with an A/T equipped car. When configured correctly, Jetta TDIs are great cars that sip gas, are reliable, and cheap to operate. And performance wise, they'll embarrass just about any other car that produces similar fuel economy numbers. BTDT.
FWIW, my mom's 06 Beetle requires a $300 - $500 transmission service every 40k miles. A service that can't be DIY without spending $500 for special tools, as there is no dipstick.
The DSG auto trans runs $3k - $5k for replacement. Used versions start (when I checked) at $2200. Failures of DSG transmissions are common when the maintenance isn't performed as scheduled, every 40k.
Consider yourself warned.

i'm holding out for the 2015 Golf Variant Sportwagen TDI Allroad. If it actually happens, going to be a badass car based on the rumored specs. Subaru-like ground clearance, AWD, 45+MPG (doubt that if all-time AWD).

I'm fairly certain the engine is built in Germany and shipped to Mexico along with other parts. Assembled in Mexico for sure.
Here is my take:
I have a 2011 TDI with 55k on it. I do a decent bit of city driving and usually go 75+ on the hwy so I avg about 38mpg. I love the car though. Fun to drive for how efficient it is. The turbo really helps a lots with that.
The space is pretty good but if anything limits you in this area, its the size of the doors and trunk opening. You can't always get bigger objects into the car in the first place. I have people in the back seat often and never a complaint about room.
The diesels historically have not had the reliability issues that the gas engines have had. Like I said, I'm only at 55k on it, but I'm planning to run it to 200k. I've been doing preventative maintenance too and haven't had any other issues, except I just got some new tires at 50k (the original hankooks were falling apart although tread was fine on them surprisingly).
I decided to go with the DSG auto transmission, but that may not have been the best idea. Before I bought, I read that the DSGs had problems sometimes, but I decided to go for it anyway because I was afraid it would be miserable to drive a standard in Houston traffic. I haven't had any problems with the DSG yet, but after reading even more, I'm afraid that I might have problems over the next 100k miles.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase. If I had to go back and do it all over again, I would probably buy the exact same car, but I would get a stick instead of the DSG, and maybe not get white.

We have 2012 but not tdi.Tdi are 7k more. When I did the math,it would take a long time to recoup that savings from gas. savings start at 100,000 miles

Lot quicker when you're putting 3,400 miles on it a month.
