Which bands in the past were universally panned as generic, sappy, cheesedick, rock and roll, just like Nickelback is today?

I'm thinking 60's-80's, since we all know that Creed was Nickelback before Nickelback

Creed was legit. They had some cheesy songs but they had some really good ones too.

My Own Prison(song and album) is the real deal.

I'm thinking Bon Jovi might have been the original Nickelback

That was my initial thought but they DO have a little diversity in their music. More than nickelback at least.

Same with Creed. Yeah they suck now, but My Own Prison was actually a solid album. Tremonti has some talent as well.

Guys like Bon Jovi or Poison for the 80's. I agree My Own Prison is a legit album.

Cheap Trick were no Nickelback in the late 70's early 80's.

The concert I went to was Journey, cheap trick and Heart. Cheap trick was so cheesy they made Journey look subtle.

No doubt this is true I was talking at the time of the 70's-80's. I am sure they suck now as most old acts do.

Journey, Stycks, Bee Gees,

ETA: Styxs....I knew it was a contrived spelling.

Nickelback has never done anything nearly as cool as Auf Wiedersehen or Big Eyes.

Journey, Stycks, Bee Gees,

Journey surely fits the bill, although I do enjoy some of their early work.

Styx was much more adventurous and varied than Nickelback have ever been, and the Gibb brothers were well respected songwriters and producers before their disco popularity skyrocketed.

38 Special, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Loverboy, Nightranger, and REO Speedwagon all would be a good comparisons from the 70s and 80s.
