thoughts?
quote:

If one day you are driving down a Louisiana highway and come across a large flashing sign with the warning "Speed Trap Ahead," you can thank Rep. Steve Pylant, R-Winnsboro, whose bill to so label certain towns is headed to the House floor. The House Transportation Committee today approved his HB 961, which would require municipalities that earn over half of their revenue from traffic violations to pay for and post signs to tell motorists they are entering a speed trap. According to the bill, towns that refuse to comply would forfeit all of their traffic ticket revenue to the state.

i definitely agree with this part:
quote:

"Revenue-based law enforcement is the wrong way to go," he said, adding later, "If you want to play town, go buy a Monopoly set."

Support.

There are way too many towns in this state that are way too small to have a dept and should leave policing up to the Sheriff's Office and State Troopers assigned to the parish.

For example, Sorrento here in the AP has less than 1500 people and they have a dept. That is a complete joke as its way too small to justify it and they still did it anyway. It's no wonder they're having trouble finding an insurer for their dept. They're about to disband it and turn it over to the Sheriff's Office and that's what should've happened in the first place. You should have have a minimum of 8000 to 10000 residents to justify a dept of your own.

It is about stealing money from strangers, because that's what small towns have decided they want to do instead of paying for the police department they can't afford to honestly maintain. It's despicable fiscal nonsense from a state that's supposed to be filled with fiscal conservatives.

Either you can afford a PD or you can't and have to let the Sheriff's Office and State Police Troopers handle things.

Golden Meadow.

Of course, if you don't already know to slow down when approaching that one, I don't know what to tell you.

...and therefore motorists would slow down. Awesome, makes perfect sense.

After all, isn't that the point, to get people to drive safely?

quote:

Yet Rep. Terry Landry, D-Lafayette, the former State Police superintendent, objected to labeling towns as speed traps. "I do have a problem placing a stigma on our communities," he said.

WTF? That's the argument against?

So they lower their violations to only cover 49-50% of revenue & that's ok? Shouldn't states investigate towns that exceed xxx% of revenue to make sure they aren't fleecing citizens like bounty hunters? They made Ferriday, LA finally increase their in town speed limit from 25 mph. How about addressing the issue instead of just writing a new law?

You can probably add Georgetown and Richwood to that list as well.

The fact that Sorrento is incorporated is a damned joke of itself. Golden Meadow has been a trap for decades.

Baskin is the worst to me.

Although, this is going to highly encourage "unreported" tickets. That is, when the ticket is written, you are informed that if you pay within 72 hours there will be no official documentation of the ticket.

They small towns will find a way to put it on the books as something else, I guarantee it.

Hmm, now we're cutting to the chase.

The state wants ALL of that money, and this is a way to get it under the guise of "being for the little man."

In Texas, 60 percent of all traffic fine revenue already goes to the state, even if you play by the rules. I don't know about Louisiana, but this smacks of a pure money grab.

I don't trust politicians of either stripe when it comes to money... sorry.

So far I'm the only one I know to get out of a ticket in GM - well, technically it was the girl driving my car without a license while I was drunk in the passenger seat.

A friend of mine actually got out and was taking pictures of him and his girlfriend with the cop when he got ticked there. They're great shots, the cop is smiling and everything.

There won't be any money to grab if the law passes. The departments in question won't even exist.

The fundamental problem is traffic fines exist. Law enforcement should not have a revenue incentive. 50% or not

What if all towns put up signs though?

Just thinking. Wouldn't that make the signs so common people wouldn't pay them any attention?

Finally, a lawmaker willing to actually represent his constituents.

I make it a point to flip off every cop I pass in Washington, Krotz, Port Barre, and Livonia.
