ICPT has been fun lately. Definitely wouldn't put in a long term portfolio but have been enjoying the swings with my "play" money.

I usually charge a lot for this, but here you go.

U can't really rank stocks in general because stock are broken down into sectors. Energy, technology etc... If I had to guess u don't have the knowledge or cash to buy individual stocks. Stick to index funds and ETFs my friend.

Ur portfolio should look something like this.

GLD
RDS-a
XOM
TWTR
SIRI
WFC
F
GE
PG
VOX

How can you say that? I'd think just about anybody could pick some quality stocks with a little research? XOM, GE, WFT, GIS, WDC, PFE, MCD, V, BRK-B, RF.. off the top of my head, is a pretty solid and diverse enough couple stocks, I'd think.. to go along with a couple mutual funds

or cash to buy individual stocks

How much cash does one need to buy individual stocks?

ETFs are cheaper than trying to buy individual stocks and trying to stay diversified

And how is that different from a mutual fund? I honestly don't know

ETFs trade throughout the trading day, like a stocks, while mutual funds trade only at the end of the day at the net asset value (NAV) price. Most ETFs track to a particular index and therefore have lower operating expenses than actively invested mutual funds. Thus, ETFs improve your rate of return on investments. In addition, ETFs have no investment minimums or sales loads, unlike traditional mutual funds, which have both. However, most indexed mutual funds will not have sales loads.

And why this?

Because of that?

I mean, what's enough cash?

Because, if you're investing and not gambling, you want to have as much of the market as possible, when you're ready to retire.. making smart, value buys in solid companies that project to grow and increase profits.

What's wrong with purchasing individual stocks along with maxing out IRA, contributing to 401k up to company match, and buying a mutual fund biweekly.. or ETF? I don't know why say that, just curious.

There are 30 stocks in the Dow jones... U could buy 1 of each for 1,000's of dollars or u could get the same exposure by buying 1 share of DIA @ $118 ETF. It takes a lot of money to have a diversified portfolio... It works out for me because I have access to a lot of money. U guys however should stick to ETF, mutual and index funds.

Are you serious clark? Are you some kind of crazy troll? If not, why on earth would anyone take any kind of advice from you after you've posted that you can barely live off of $150k.

Only other stock I have I'm my etrade is XOM @ $89 which I added a few months back.

I'm not good with money.... I guess thats why I always had to work to make more off it. I was never the housewife type to just make 40k and save 20k of it while sitting at home with no life jerking off to JC penny mags because I can't afford internet.

I usually invest my 401k in shell stock. I buy/sell dips and usually try and be in for 5% div....I've been doing this for 3 years and I have made 16% 21% 17% annually. U need a strategy

I'm 32 now. I've made 6 figures since I was 23 and all I have is 6k and a lot of bills....I have 6k in cash in my etrade acct. What kinda car can I get for that?

I'm just saying after I pay a $1400 house note and 2 $600 car notes I live check to check...... Only difference between me and a guy in a trailer in Livingston is the bank will give me more rope to hang myself with. Money just doesn't go far. I remember being 20yrs old and thinking people who make 70k should have all their shite together... Now I make twice that and I actually had more cash then.

This is in reverse order from this guy's post history. I just dont understand why he would be posting about people not having enough money to invest, but he can't keep his life together with $150k/year.

And how do you know how much money I have access to?

You may be right, I'm relatively new to this stuff. I've had a Roth and a taxable account that I contribute to biweekly, for a few years now. What are some ETFs you'd recommend?

I thought the same thing after reading his post in this thread.

He admits to only having 6k in his etrade account in another thread. Then comes here saying most people here don't have enough money to pick individual stocks.

My favorite part was this quote:

I'm sure your financial advice is very sought after, especially after reading your post history.

He's either trolling (which I don't think), or has a very highly distorted sense of self worth.

O wow.. I was on the road earlier, when going through this thread, didn't see all that.
