The name your favorite guitar masters thread got me thinking about the unsung heroes of the band stand. Diverse range to pick from as well (jazz pianists, organ masters, clav masters, etc)

IMHO:

1. Herbie Hancock
2. John Medeski
3. Paige McConnell
4. Jimmy Smith
5. James Booker

Who you got?

Pretty solid list. Don't have anyone to add really. I would replace Page with Brad Mehldau. One of my favorite players (not in that caliber) was rami jaffee. He played his tasteful licks for the Wallflowers "Bringing Down the Horse" record. Freakin love his sound.

PS jimmy smith

Chick Corea.
-Saw him and Béla Fleck last month- incredible.

Bruce Hornsby
-Whether his solo work, or sitting in on someone else's cut, i love the way he plays. He has a very recognizable style.

Good calls all around. Couple not mentioned yet:

Richard Tee, the guy behind that signature NYC Rhodes sound-did a lot with Simon.

Bill Payne, per other thread Little Feat's resident Ninja.

Bernie Worrell, Parliament, Heads etc.

Ian McClagan, Faces.

Nicky Hopkins, too many cool parts to list but you've probably played air piano to him.
