I'm not coming here to get on a soapbox and cry about stupid things BUT,

Is anyone else tired of watching the degradation of skills in college and the nba?

It seems that every year that passes it gets worse and worse

The officials allow these guys to carry on almost every possession and these guys grabbing the ball and jumping ate traveling everytime but never get called.

They don't have to learn to dribble properly.

Good point because of course MJ never traveled and carried...

What do you mean by degradation of skills? They turn the ball over?

Yeah I still don't understand how every pg seems to turn the ball over in their hand on every dribble and yet it's ok

It's only illegal when you palm the ball.

An usher at the Mavs game and I got in a 10 minute discussion on how many points Dr. J could have scored with modern travelling rules. We decided on somewhere between 30 and 35 PPG. We're only half kidding (or at least I was), but the rule on travelling has been extremely liberalized, allowing guys to do things with the ball now that were literally impossible in the old NBA. Not because players are better now, but because a lot of moves today would have been illegal.

Of course. Your posts aren't complete unless you complain about them.

Probably because you don't know the rule and don't understand what a carry truly is.

Now this is something rational to actually complain about nowadays.

It blows my mind that so many college kids struggle with free throws

It's weird how while almost all parts of the game have advanced and improved over the years, free throw shooting has stayed the same.

You're way off base on this IMO. It's not individual skills that have degraded in the higher levels of basketball.
The lost skills today are team skills. Teams don't run offenses like they used to, everything is isolation, pick and roll, or a quick hit set. It shows on defense as well, a lot of teams don't seem to be working together on defense as much as just individually guarding guys.
If there is a lost individual art in basketball today it's post moves

This x100

The players didn't change the rules themselves. As a player you're going to do whatever you can to gain an advantage. If it's within the rules or not getting called, you can't blame the player

You are way off base. The offenses today are so much better than they were in the past. They are much more complex, much more efficient, and is a night and day difference from the 60's, 70's, 80's, etc.

And team defense today is much better than it was in the past. I was watching the 1968 NBA Finals the other day, and they played old-school man-to-man. And I don't use "old school" in a good way.

Man-to-man back then consisted of literally following your man around the court wherever he went like a puppy dog. There was no concept of team defense.

Now, you have players working together on the pick and roll, either switching, running ICE, hedging, etc. It's much more complicated today. You don't stick on your man, you sag towards the middle when the ball is on the other side. Helping and recovering, rotating, etc. Rotations are a big part of defense. Defenders didn't used to rotate like today back in the 70's.

Defense today is in another stratosphere compared to back then. Same with offense.
