Westbrook finger roll

Ginobili finger roll

Jeremy Lin finger roll

And that's within a mere 20 seconds of searching, I might add. Quit bringing retarded-arse opinions to this board.

When I played, our coach would get so pissed off if we dribbled it too much. I agree, people dribble too much.

College sure, but that's because the low age reqs to play in the NBA have made sure all the NBA-ready high schoolers jump right in.

Consequently the NBA is at its highest level of talent across the league ever

That's really what it comes down to

I know it might seem easy to say because my pro team is still a contender, but SA was rock solid in the 90s, too. The NBA is better by leaps and bounds than it was just 10-12 years ago, much less the 80s. Any opinion to the contrary is really just leaning on nostalgia.

My issue with a lot of college players is this:
- Too many guys are poor free throw shooters
- Poor shot selection
- Jump to pass too often
- Set bad screens
- Lack of ball fakes and pump fakes
- Don't catch the ball in triple threat
- No jump stops

A lot of this is due to AAU basketball where you play a bunch of games and never really practice simple things like this. The good thing is a lot of this gets fixed pretty quickly once guys make the league.

The idea that people can't handle the ball and stuff like that is just silly.

Watching LaTech vs Iona the other night, I was astounded by how often Tech's point guard dribbled right into a double team.

so Phil Jackson won 11 championships with inefficent offense. Backing down in the post has been the catalyst for the offenses of damn near 80% of every NBA champion in history

phil jackson paved the way for winning titles without an offensive post presence

and just because the NBA historically was opposed to change doesn't mean posting up is efficient

shaq is a rare exception, which is why i said "almost always" inefficient. there aren't many shaqs in the history of the NBA

quote:

I am talking about breaking your man down 1 on 1. You only see it done at an elite level from 3 players, Melo, Duran and Kobe. It is absolutely a lost art.

again, this is inefficient and leads to the worst shots in basketball (long 2s). that's playing stupid

there are PLENTY of guys who can go 1 on 1, but they don't b/c they play efficient team ball

quote:

The hook shot, finger roll, leaner, and scoop shot have all essentially been vaporized from the game of basketball and 1 on 1 scoring has suffered greatly.

"1 on 1" basketball is for shitty eras like the late 90s/early 00s

but the rule on travelling has been extremely liberalized, allowing guys to do things with the ball now that were literally impossible in the old NBA. Not because players are better now, but because a lot of moves today would have been illegal.

I read this

quote:

The Lost art of dribbling in basketball

And then think about Julius Randle, Anthony Davis, and some other big guys bringing it up the court like a damn PG. If the guards have lost the art of dribbling, the bigs have seemed to have gained it.

I do think there are some skills that have been lost among some of the top guys coming out of AAU into college. And I'm talking simple stuff like boxing out, passing (James Young damn near gives me an aneurysm sometimes over this), and free throw shooting. But on the flipside I've seen some better shot blocking as a whole and a larger range of guards who can physically take it to the hoop (I think Baloo's comment about the interpretation of traveling probably contributed to this). This season with UK, I've seen one of the better rebounding teams in the country and they do a much better job of tracking the miss then I've seen previous teams do.

It seems to be more a shift in skills than anything on the college level. Some skills are definitely lacking. Some aren't.
