Population Status Trends
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck populations are currently stable or increasing. The species expanded its range significantly in the latter half of the 20th century, and has benefited in recent years from the placement of nest boxes across key portions of its range. Breeding Bird Survey and Christmas Bird Count data both confirm that populations of this species have increased significantly over the past 30 years.
Conservation Issues
The existence of healthy coastal wetlands greatly benefits Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. In past years, over-hunting was a serious concern, largely due to the species' relatively docile nature. Current populations, however, seem to be secure in number

Nope. Kill them frickers but they are usually gone when big duck opens. However, there are usually casualties during teal season even though they are double the size of a teal.
After reading your post again, I think I understand that you don't give 2 fricks if the season is open or not. They taste good btw, since you are about to break the law outlaw.

OK, not a super-protected animal...good.
I'm not the issue here, it's my killing-machine 11 yr old. A few minutes ago I see THIS walk up to the back door of the house.
tryin' to decide if I should fuss at him or not. Regardless, something's gotta get cooked.
It has to be cooked by tomorrow (headed out for Alaska), so I don't have time to let it soak in water for several days like I do with most game.

He gets a pass. Hell I killed more doves outta season with a pellet rifle before the age of 13-14 than I've killed legally as an adult

Are you sure there were doves and not Robins?

May want to take down that pic... I've heard of people getting tickets in the mail from online pics. Never happened to me so idk if true or not, but I'd rather be safe than sorry myself.

Adjacent powerlines and cornfields made for easy shots. Granted I wasn't above killing my share of robins and mockingbirds. I was a equal oppurtunity kinda feller

This X 1000. I am sure Greenjeans is out busting turkey poachers and over the limit fish takers right now but might check into the OB tonight.

Giving Greenjeans a challenge to come hunt your junior lawbreaker down.

Greenjeans would be shocked by the govt information black hole. Regardless, probably best to not bring too much attention to the OB. Will sanitize in a bit.

Not needed for this application. Since it's just one, clean whole and fire up the grill. Might want to throw some yardbird on there to make the effort worthwhile.

We saw two flocks of those this morning on the edge of Bayou Sauvage NWR. They are protected there and they know it; they ain't scared of fisherman like normal ducks.

Ain't scared of duckhunters during duck season. About as dumb as a box of rocks all the time.
