Good Chicago eats, Summertime.

Just booked plane tickets for a five day trip to Chicago. It's one of the only major US cities I haven't made it to yet (actually been twice but never left the airport)
I'm staying in the Loop near Wabash and Madison.
Have no idea what I want to eat.
I'm thinking one really nice expensive dinner (jacket required type) and the rest at nice but not super expensive places.
I want to sample some different things.
Personal preferences lean towards Mediterranean, Italian and Vietnamese.
But all is good.
May try deep dish pizza once, to see what I think about it.
Going for a five day weekend for July 4th.

I've been to Chicago twice. Only place I really remember is Geno's East.
It was delicious.

o up Clark a few blocks north of Wrigley Field and you will find Mediterranean Heaven
Click on link at your own risk
Rizza 5255 N. Clark - take a cab. they have a parking garage across street from the restaurant if you are driving. I dream about this place and never miss it when I go to Chicago. Some of the best food I have ever had.
Leg of lamb. Kabobs, dill rice, nothing bad on menu. Call and make sure they aren't cash only because I have a strange feeling they don't take cards. I could be wrong.
China town is just southwest of McCormick Center. Catch a cab for real Chinese. Have Concierge at hotel recommend a Chinese restaurant there for you.
Navy Pier area has lots of places you'd like. Lincoln Park has Real German (heavy war like tasty stuffed pig food that will make you want to invade Poland)
Greek Food at Athena Restaurant on South Halstead.

eataly is only eight bloks from the Hotel, may have to look into that as well.
See people say "Go to a national board, why post here for food info on vacations"
To that I say, you guys helped me so much in NYC, DC and SF that I knew I could count on advice in Chicago.
After this trip, Portland and Seattle will be the only two major US cities left to check out.

A lot of that sounds great.
We are not driving.
I'm taking tht orange line from Midway to our hotel then plan to walk or take the L most places and use Uber for others.
I don't know if we will make it into the north area.

Rizza has a location at 432 W. Ontario, which would be a lot closer to your hotel. Maybe even walking distance.
I just like the Clark Street location and am certain it would be worth an $8.00 cab fare.

Eataly sucks. Bright lights, fancy looking food, but the quality is no better than Dominick's, while the prices are 5x as much. The pizza there is terrible. Not sure how they can have such beautiful ovens and make a crap pizza. Lots of wannabe cosmo tourists there.
Which hotel are you in? If you're right by Eataly you're not far from La Scarola, if you want Italian. It's about a 3/4 mile walk west across the river on West Grand, and really excellent.
You will likely be disappointed in the Chinese food in Chinatown. It's not very good. I tried one of the recommendations on this board. Wow was it bad. Made we yearn for Five Happiness sort of bad.

Places I can recommend (and I didn't live in the suburbs twenty years ago. I live downtown now and know the downtown scene probably better than anyone on this board)"
Breakfast: Yolk in Streeterville is as good a casual breakfast joint as you'll find in any city.
Pizza: Three are worth eating - Pequod's, Lou's, and Piece. The rest are crap.
Italian beef: Portillo's is the best I've had. Sweet peppers, dipped. Haters wanna say it's for tourists. I don't care. It's Chicago's best Italian beef.
Sushi: don't believe the hype. Chicago doesn't have good sushi. It's essentially Little Tokyo quality all around. There were two really good sushi restaurants, really expensive, but not surprisingly they closed.
Vietnamese: You have much better in New Orleans.
Korean: There's a good amount of good Korean food. If you want casual, try Crisp in Lakeview. The fried chicken is OK, but the bimbimbop is great. It's very casual.
Mexican: Nuevo Leon in Pilsen. Pink line to 18th St. Dirt cheap and as good as you'll find in America. Don't waste your time with celebrity chefs in the downtown area. Rick Bayless doesn't know real Mexican food.
Chinese food: like I said, and will stand by, the Chinese food in Chinatown is bad.
Greek: I haven't found any great Greek. Artopolis is good.
Italian: La Scarola is great southern Italian. Davanti Enoteca over in University Village is good too.
Small Plates: Purple Pig is okay. You'll wait for it, be rushed, and be crowded by others, but at least it's not expensive. Girl and Goat is better, but more expensive. Though they say you need reservations weeks in advance, if you arrive at 5, you can often get a seat.
Steaks: no better than Ruth's Chris. No need to try.

Seattle
Awesome place. Me and my wife went last summer.
Been to Chicago 4 times and am going again this summer.
Nice place for a steak is Chicago Chop House or Gibsons. Both are good. I'm sure there is someone on this board that will tell you they suck, but they are very good steaks.
We have always done Giordano's for pizza. I think most of the pizza places are pretty comparable.
You should eat or at least grab a drink at the top of the Hancock Tower in the Signature Lounge. It is on the 95th floor. Awesome views.
You should go to Wrigleyville one of the nights you are there. They have some awesome bars and the atmosphere is really cool, especially on a game night. Goose Island is awesome and so is the Cubbie Bear.

You're in luck. I recently saw that someone wrote an open letter to the city of Chicago telling them to step up their cuisine. Im sure by July they will have improved.
