Sanctions? Russia: "WHO CARES!!!"

If all goes well, Russia will be laughing harder at the West and it's allies in May.

They are on the verge of signing a deal with China.

Putin goes to China

quote:

The Holy Grail for Moscow is a natural gas supply deal with China that is apparently now close after years of negotiations. If it can be signed when Putin visits China in May, he will be able to hold it up to show that global power has shifted eastwards and he does not need the West.

quote:

The support of Beijing is vital for Putin. Not only is China a fellow permanent member of the U.N. Security Council with whom Russia thinks alike, it is also the world's second biggest economy and it opposes the spread of Western-style democracy.

quote:

Little wonder, then, that Putin thanked China for its understanding over Ukraine in a Kremlin speech on Tuesday before signing the treaty claiming back Crimea, 60 years after it was handed to Ukraine by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.

It's been talked about very little here. I posted about it twice. Golitsyn... This is in his book.

Putin is moving in to South America too: LINK

quote:

Away from the conflict in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin is quietly seeking a foothold in Latin America, military officials warn.

To the alarm of lawmakers and Pentagon officials, Putin has begun sending navy ships and long-range bombers to the region for the first time in years.

Russia’s defense minister says the country is planning bases in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, and just last week, Putin’s national security team met to discuss increasing military ties in the region.

I ask one question of this board. Since the "fall" of Russia, what direction has the majority of europe taken politically?

I wouldn't go that far just yet. The Russian economy is struggling mightily as of late.

Russia's most powerful businessmen waited for over an hour Thursday to hear from President Vladimir Putin, whose decision to annex the Crimean Peninsula has cost their companies hundreds of millions of dollars in market value.

The Russian stock market has tanked 10% this month, wiping out billions in market capitalization. Economists have slashed growth forecasts to zero this year and foreign investors have been pulling money out of Russian banks. The Standard & Poor's ratings agency on Thursday cited all these issues when it cut its outlook for the country.

He really believed that his greatness would just win people over and everyone would love him.

Russia is an economic joke. Step back and look at the full picture. They have natural gas, orphans and mobsters...no other commmodity, they are wholly absent from the modern economy. And who do you think China is more closely economically tied to? A kleptocracy ruling over a drunk, depressed declining population that may supply them natural gas or the largest economy on earth with manufacturing and financial ties built up over the last 40 years.

Militarily Russia has no ability to project power beyond its neighbors, is surrounded by countries that are mostly hostile and is already dealing with ethnic clashes within its own borders...and they just added some more ethnic problems with Crimea.

So, yeah, Obama has been caught with his pants down and hasn't been very adept at managing these affairs, but, ultimately, and thankfully, this is much bigger than him.

Most of their energy plants are coal fired. There are significant reserves and production in China and they have LNG import facilities, but it's just not enough to keep up with the rising demand.
