Haven't seen this talked about, but does anyone think he could seriously give Johnny Jones a run for his money on some Texas or LA kids? Auburn obviously holds some weight on LA kids with who they've gotten in football, and now with a strong recruiter in basketball, what are the chances they take someone away from us we really want?

I get that it's "Just Auburn", but it was also "Just Tennessee" before Pearl got there too and loaded up that roster with many good players. I want to say we wont see any impact, but in basketball 1 recruit can make a big difference and Pearl is capable of taking 1 guy from us IMO in any recruiting cycle.

i doubt Pearl has Texas and Louisiana ties, and I highly doubt he has better (maybe as strong) as Mccray does in Georgia. Not to mention our international reach. i just don't think pearl recruits the same areas as us

Pearl brought in players from different areas of the country at Tennessee. None that I know of came from the states you mentioned.

He's not nearly as great as people are giving credit for but if anyone should be worried it's UGA and Ga Tech.

Did he pull any Louisiana recruits while at Tennessee? If he did, I missed it.

I think he goes inner city, urban, and Atlanta. He brought them to Tenn., he'll do it again. Big city players, not N.O. either.

This. Some people act like Auburn just hired the second coming of John Wooden.

I agree with what you are saying, but I think with Pearl's hire people see another conference school getting serious about their basketball program and begin to wonder why we have not done the same. Instead, we hired Trent and now "the bullet." Not much media bounce inherent in those hires. LSU fans cry out, we want a guy that will buy us pizza....

I don't see Bruce Pearl as a threat. If LSU loses a big time in state prospect it's most likely going to be to a top 5-10 program i.e. Duke, NC, Kentucky, Arizona, etc.

Which is probably the first time we can say that with confidence since the early 90s. Johnny getting it done on the recruiting trail

How is that Anthony Grant hire working out? How did those Lane Kiffin hires work out? Charlie Wiess? Getting semi big name coaches aren't necessarily great things. I'm not saying he isn't a decent coach, but he's Tom Izzo or anything. And he brings trouble to every town he goes to.

If you don't think LSU is behind the basketball program, you haven't been paying attention. Look at our assistant coaches and recruits coming in. Trent was a disaster on an epic scale. We've got a deep deep hole to dig out of and we are headed in the right direction.

If anything, I could see some competition for North Mississippi or maybe North Louisiana kids. But I'm not sure it will be make or break players. We will have to see though.

Basketball recruiting is nothing like football. Sounds like you are assuming it is. Basketball pipelines are made my coach connections, i.e. AAU coaches, HS coaches. Location rarely matters IMO.

If Bruce Pearl continues to cheat in recruiting, as he did at Tennessee, he'll have a temporary impact, until he gets caught again.

Right now, in LSU MBB, we are recruiting well and what we need is "IMPACT" from our coaching staff.

A couple of really good ball handling and shooting guards should give us all the IMPACT we need, and don't forget the coaching of x's and o's.

Will not impact our recruiting.

His recruiting will be superior to ours, so that affects us on the court.

he's going to do better than getting Mickey and Martin in one class and having Simmons and the monster juco signings?

And the 7'er

There is some major stupidity going on in this thread. Critisize CJJ's playcalling all you want, but critisizing his recruiting is dumb.

I don't see it. I believe he focuses on juco and atlanta. Hard to go much further with under armour in basketball.

Bruce Pearl is an attention whore and he had a sycophantic media supporting him as he provided good copy.

He is a good coach but if you look at Tennessee's accomplishments in NCAA play they were very lucky. It seemed every year they would get a top 4-6 seed and play a bottom 4 seed or so in first round. Then it seemed the higher seed in the other half of their first weekend bracket would lose and they would play a 12 to 15 seed.
They may have advanced to the Sweet 16 but only made it to elite 8 once.

I still resent their getting a better seeding in 2006 than LSU which was conference champion.

Yes he's an attention whore. Yes he's a cheater. Yes he has targeted certain inner cities in the past. Bottom line, he's a good coach and a damn good recruiter. Just look at who he got at Tennessee.

Will he make Auburn a contender and steal our recruits? It is clearly too soon to make any judgements like that.

But if you think his hiring doesn't negatively affect our basketball program's success, even a little bit, you're fooling yourself. He's good and Auburn got themselves a damn good coach.

In closing, when he was at tennessee and my UT cousin was talking smack, I used to say this to him...Pearl reminds me of Dale Brown. Excellent recruiter. Excellent promoter. Excellent motivator. Questionable coaching ability.
