Don't appear bothered in any way by them. Your misery is how they obtain satisfaction. Best way to combat it is to go about your day, be happy, ignore the bullshite and kick arse.

Fight back.

Depends on the situation, but in my experience, the wrath of cruel or rude people can be avoided by either:

1) Doing what you're supposed to do. This assumes that they're either your boss, or some other authority figure (drill instructor, teacher, whatever). If they're not sociopaths, you'll be fine.

2) Brushing people back. In my profession I deal with assholes all the time, but rarely do I meet someone who can't be dissuaded from giving you shite with some subtle motivation. This assumes you're on their level or smarter than they are. Most assholes don't get by being jerks to other assholes, they victimize the feeble. But being too brash to an a-hole is just going to cause drama. So instead, when the opportunity is right, you provide the inference that you know what they're doing, and you're not to be fricked with. Most people will get it.

Sometimes you'll encounter someone who is a sociopath, or someone who just has all the cards for some reason. In those situations, you just put their name on your "ruin their life when the opportunity develops" list (everyone has one, right?) and go about your business.
