LSU Ag center exploring new ways to kill wild hogs

I found this article interesting
LINK
"Experts estimate that killing between 75 percent and 85 percent of the wild hogs in North America would do nothing but maintain their population. In other words, more than 85 percent of the wild hogs roaming the continent today would have to be killed in order to keep their numbers in check."

It's amazing that we have allowed ourselves to get to this point because of idiotic control methods of our government.
It's just like snow/blue geese. All of a sudden they are panicking trying to kill as many as possible by letting people outlaw, this of course after they arrested, fined, stripped guns/rights from hunters, etc etc etc, for doing the exact thing they are begging you to do now!
Now it"s gators, I'm sure it will be red snapper in a few years after everyone has abandoned their equipment and desire to go out for 2 fish.

If it can be fricked up, our government will find away. The hog hunting laws in Pennsylvania are ridiculous and extremely confusing.

Yep...I fear that the only thing that will spark outrage is when these hogs get aggressive enough and end up killing a group of small children playing in a park. (or some avoidable crap like that)

That 85% is hard to grasp, I hope the bait they are working with is effective

Sounds like they are still studying it, might be a while before used. I am not sure how I feel about that tactic though. Seems like a lot could go wrong.

No more than sharpshooters flying around wooded areas shooting at running pigs.
I know one area that is in the plan to fly over has private property scattered throughout. The private property is the only places with fields large enough to get clear shots. The thought of bullets raining down from the sky is unsettling. This isn't Texas peanut fields 1000 yards across.
Kansas has created a law making sport hunting for hogs illegal in an effort to keep people from bringing in trapped hogs from other places. Only land owners can shoot them. Missouri is considering something similar.
The poison bait may be the only hope. Running dogs, trapping, hunting just isn't enough. They ran dogs all last summer on a tract of land I hunt. Only difference I saw this year was less deer and more 100lb+ pigs.

Will be nice if it works as hopes and not harm other animals.
Mix some Slap Ya Mama in it. Kill, season, and preserve em all at once.

If we get them frickers to go into a smokehouse where they automatically killed cleaned and smoked that would be wonderful better.

very interesting article...
however, I really don't understand why we have this problem...there has been a pretty good population of wild hogs in cenla for many decades and I don't remember any crisis resulting like we are hearing about today...I am not so sure those statistics are correct...
fwiw, I also really don't think that some dude riding around in a helicopter shooting random pigs is gonna help the situation much...check out how much it costs to run a helicopter and you will probably agree that it is not such a good idea...

I'm looking forward to thi summer when water dries up and I an ambush some pigs on water holes.
Set up a feeder yesterday to try and get a big son of a gun I've been seeing tracks for.

I need to go back up and check the cameras. They moved out around December but this is about time they start returning.
The problem is only getting worse for us. over the years our reactions have been:
4 years ago= Dang, we got a few hogs. Time to start trapping.
2-3 years ago= shite, those bastards are everywhere!
Last year and this year= Holy frick!! something has to be done and we built big pens on property.
Only getting worse. We took about thirty out last year and didnt put a dent into them.

I've wondered the same thing, hogs have been in the US for centuries. What has happened in the last 10 years that their population has exploded? Surely something must have changed or this would have happened decades ago.

Poor people no longer headlight every night of the week.
My paw paw worked sixty-eighty hours a week when he was young and hunted every night to feed his kids.
The old pictures with jeeps and tractors loaded down with hogs say just how many they killed.

That's two good points. We just started noticing them on our lease about five years ago. We have killed and trapped year round. It is only getting worse.
Plus, they are some smart animals. The more we trap, the harder it gets. We are using any tips and ideas we can. Have used some doozies but it seems to work, temporarily.
