Which credit card do you recommend for flyer miles?

Barclays Arrival is the hottest card out now. You earn 2 miles (points) for ever $1 spent on all purchases. It's really good for domestic travel.
Chase Sapphire Preferred is another good one. You earn 2 points per $1 spent on travel and dining purchases and 1 point per $1 on everything else. It's good for international travel because the points transfer over to many airlines.
Both have 40,000 miles (points) bonuses if you spend $3000 in 90 day bonuses right now.
ETA here's an entire thread relating to credit card discussion LINK

To make some use of this thread, do I have any need for the Barclays card if I already have a Freedom/Sapphire combo?

Only if you are getting the sign-up bonuses. No real need to have both.
100,000 AA miles is the best deal out there right now (if it is still going on)

I think its a highly debatable topic IMO, as you can see by Bacon's opinion.
I'm wrestling with it myself, as booking things like off chain hotels, award ticket taxes and fees, services like AirBnB, etc. can be covered using Barclay points you have accumulated.
I think if you can accumulate a decent size of Barclay points every year to offset the $89 fee (and you really like the FICO score and TriptIt Pro as well) you could find some value in keeping it.
But it also depends on how you play the game. Do you just move from spending bonus to spending bonus, churn, etc.

Very doable.
I just don't have a need for 100,000 AA miles at this minute....or maybe I do?

I'm still torn on getting the Barclay's Card or not...

I'm not really a churner. Just looking to maximize my rewards as my spending increases. I've always been of the mind that you shouldn't split your points (between programs) but I could always be persuaded.

You should diversify a little bit, which protects you from devaluations of particular programs.
However, you are right, if you split too much, you'll be hitting devaluations in all those programs before you could ever use them. Finding the right mix is a case by case basis.
Right now, I have three types.
Chase UR - Earn 6,000 points a month - 72,000 a year - $95 fee (Can supercharge with Ink Plus as needed)
Starwood - Earn 1750 points a month - 21000 a year - $65 fee
Barclay's - earn 2500 points a month - 30,000 or $300 a year - $89 fee.
Still working on my mix.
And then whatever card I want to get as a spending bonus earn and burn.

I'd just get it to as least burn through the free $440 if you got something coming up. Plus you can always downgrade to the no fee version. I don't know if it still works, but apparently if you apply over the phone, the spending bonus is $1,000 in 3 months instead of the $3,000 in 3 months they recently bumped it up to.
I got it because I had to book 2 nights at a Intercontinental and 2 nights at a Hyatt in Boston on separate weekends and wanted to keep those branded cards available for future signups. I also used some points I earned to pay the taxes and fees on my award flight to Barcelona. My fiancee got it to cover her flight to San Fran to visit a friend.
$880 in value between two signups isn't bad.

if you travel a lot, and can use your personal credit card for the airline tix, you really cannot beat going with the official airline card. They usually throw all sorts of benefits at you for doing so, priority boarding, better seating, club passes, etc. Some will give you EQM for signing up, so it can push you over a status level.
But if you don't travel a ton already, those other cards can't be beat.
I personally still use my employee credit card when I worked at a bank. 1% back, and 7.9% for life although I have never carried a balance.

7.9% for life? I'd have that thing with a zero balance sitting under glass with a hammer next to it engraved with the words "are you absolutely sure this is necessary?"

Employee credit card. I left the job over 15 years ago too.
I have no clue why they still give it to me, I dunno.
The strange thing is when I got the card, I was 24 or so, and got a job at the bank. As part of the job, you were promised a credit card. I was making $60k a year or somewhere around that, and well worked for the bank. They would only give me $1000 in credit.

The United CC seems much more appealing. 30,000 bonus miles after spending only $1,000 in 3 months. The only problem is you have to fly United

False and somewhat False.
First, there is a 50,000 point offer plus 5,000 miles when adding an authorized user after spending 2,000 in 3 months. I got targeted for this offer, but it is supposedly also available if you apply inside a Chase bank branch.
Further, if you use it on overseas legs, you are most likely not going to be on United outside of your few hour domestic connection (if you even need one). Also, if you book economy, you won't pay the premium partner award redemption rate.
My flight in December is MSY to IAD on Dec. 24, stopover to 27th, IAD to BCN, BCN to MSY. 60,000 points and $120 something bucks per person. International legs on Lufthansa
Fun fun (even though economy blows)

Says 30,000 here. When did you apply?

If you want the best offers, you gotta look harder than that. I recommend flytertalk. They can rig those advertisements to give you the best offers at certain links. The internet is kooky like that.
As I said, I was targeted for the 50,000 point offer. IE they sent the offer via the mail to get me to sign up, which I obliged them.
However, if you PHYSICALLY walk into a Chase bank, supposedly you should be able to get the same offer I did. I'm lazy and preferred to do it all from home once I got that envelope.
