Found a car I want and they were asking $36k on autotrader.

I offered $35k including any and all dealer fees.

They said they would do $36k including their dealer fees. They don't seem to want to go down.

This all happened this morning over the phone.

Suggestions?

You're only $1K off they probably think you'll budge. I would tell them 35K is your firm offer if you mean it and then move on.

Not much you can do with used car dealers. They don't have the dealer incentives that new car lots have. At $36k list price that is a weight on inventory costs, but if it hasn't been on the lot long they may not be willing to deal. Best you can do is threaten to walk or show them an ad for the same model with slightly higher miles at a lower price. If it's still there at the end of the month they may be willing to deal then to bolster sales.

Do they just take it to auction at that point if it doesn't sell?

You only offered $1000 less? You should have said you would give them $30,000, and see if they countered. Most used cars have a large profit margin, and you can drag them down to cheaper prices.

$36 is actually not a bad price for this car. I just figured I'd avoid the bullshite and said $35 out the door.

Miles?

4Runners are in high demand, still, I'd never buy a car at list. Keep at'em.

Oh okay, yeah that's not bad at all. If it was at a traditional dealership, you could probably get it lower due to it probably being a trade in. At the used car lot they're going to have a lot more in it.

I bought a used highlander in October.... Couldn't get one of them to budge either. They pulled that auction crap on me too. I walked on one of them, they said they were going to auction it that week if I didn't buy it. 2 months later after I bought elsewhere that car was still on their website, for less than what I offered. They are all POS

Don't be a phone tire kicker. Dealers get these people from all over the world wanting to ship. If you have your own financing, money/check talks. Also, a lot of times dealers make more if you finance through them. Some are more willing to negotiate that way. You can always re-finance with your bank after the deal is made.

write your off on the back of your business card. Tell them you are buying a car in 24 hours Theirs or someone else

Tell them to call if they want to deal and walk out

or you can simply say final offer If I walk off the lot I am not coming back I have a back up car I will buy

Either way You have to be willing to walk
