Hello TD.

As most of y'all who follow the NHL knows the East and West do not have the same number of teams. The West has 2 fewer teams making it statistically easier for teams to make the playoffs in the West.
I feel this is not right.

I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this?
Also what change should be done to fix this?

There are 2 changes that could be done IMO.
The first, easiest, and best IMO is to simply move Columbus or Detroit to the West.
The other option is expand the league by 2 teams (any 2 of Salt Lake, Portland, Milwaukee, Seattle, or Saskatoon).

Anyway what is everyone's thoughts on this?

Edit: added Milwaukee to city list

You listed Saskatoon is an expansion option but not Quebec City?

Best answer: Add QC and Seattle and move Columbus/Detroit west

I agree, it's unfair. Just like how the AL West had 4 teams and the NL Central had 6 teams. They corrected that garbage. I don't know why they moved the Red Wings to the East. Red Wings/Blackhawks is one of the best rivalries in the game. If anything, I think they should contract two teams before expanding. Get rid of Phoenix and Florida, they would be my top two candidates. Then even the conferences at 14 a piece by moving Detroit back to the West.

Trying to expand out west. Expanding east does not help the east\west split only make it worse.

It does if you then take a team from the East and move them West. You wouldn't pick an expansion franchise just because it's geographically a better fit into the existing alignment. You pick the best candidate based on the potential for survival as a franchise. Alignment can be worked out later.

The NHL should be contracting teams not adding them. Also before the NHL even thinks about expanding in to a new market they need to put a second team in Toronto.

Columbus and Detroit just moved from the West to the East. This is their first season in the East.

They're setting it up for expansion. They should be contracting but that will never ever happen

They recently made he Houston Astros switch leagues. I don't think it's working well.

So, making Columbus and Detroit move back to the West is fair? I think the better option is to A...let Florida move to a western location like Utah, Seattle, Portland,Regina and even it up or B...expand by two teams in the West, which is more likely going to happen. Hockey is relatively in great shape. Its becoming more popular at the youth level and college hockey is becoming more popular as well. I dont think 2 additional teams will hurt the NHL as much as some think. Attendance at NHL games is doing really well...better then the NBA actually. But moving Columbus and Detroit back to the West isnt happening, they just moved to the East.

Detroit tradionally had rivalries with Toronto, NYR, montreal, erc.

I dont have a problem relocating PHX or FLA, though

Detroit would probably riot if you tried to make them move back to the West.

If anything I would move Chicago east it is a damned shame we dont get to see themmore inthe East, Sparts you're right Detroit as an original 6 meant they were once bitter rivals with Toronto Montreal NY. Nah just like most things that don't work inthe NHL this is plainly Gary Bettmans greedy tradition destroying bullshite...

Like i already stated, the NHL needs to get Florida out of that state as fast as possible. Let them relocate to Utah, Seattle, Portland or Regina. That is really not a hard thing to do. Miami just doesnt need or want an NHL team. I think Utah would be perfect! That would be a natural rival to the Colorado Avalanche. This is the simplest resolution to this problem, but i think the NHL has expansion ideas on the horizon, so that is what i think will ultimately happen.

You can't necessarily say its not fair, because both columbus and Detroit wanted to go to the east, knowing this was the setup.

Move the Milwaukee Bucks to Seattle and give Milwaukee the Panthers and move them to the west.

Move the Panthers to Seattle.

I don't really mind the imbalance given that the West is so much better right now. Let it be easier to make the playoffs -- they have better teams right now.

Agreed. Every southern-based franchise is in trouble (and that includes Dallas, despite its past success).

Between two Toronto teams and Buffalo, wouldn't that oversaturate the market?

That would make sense, but with Dallas having an owner from the Pacific Northwest, I still think he plans to relocate the team in a few years. When you have to depend on New Year's Eve games and number retirement ceremonies to fill the arena, there's a problem.

nashville is not in trouble, at least not financially and not from an attendance/fan support standpoint... they have issues that any small market team has -- losing players they developed to free agency -- but they have a nice niche following and sell out games.
