Strief and the #saints wanted the tackle to return to the team, but #nola isn't in a position to make an offer, the agent said.

#saints tackle Zach Strief will become a free agent, his agent just told me over email.

With the #Saints being cash strapped, expect Zach Strief, Brian de la Puente and Malcolm Jenkins to all hit FA come next week.

Thinking about some prayers or voodoo for Lelito & Bryce Harris. We might need them.

It's not that we are definitely not signing them, just that they are going to be left to test the market and if they get anything over what the Saints are willing to pay they'll be gone.

So it's unlikely we resign them, but not a definite.

It's one thing to test the market, but we haven't even extended an offer to Strief (not that we much much to offer anyway). At least with Nicks (and I believe Bushrod as well) an offer was extended before they tested the market.

Panthers with $17 mil dead money

Was this before or after recent cuts and the cap increasing? I thought we had closer to $7 mil in cap space?

No this is different. To extend the offer we have to have the space that offer entails. We currently only have about half a mil so we can't put an official offer on the table.

Agents will take stuff like this and twist words to make their client look better. Remember it also said that both sides wanted to get a deal done.

My guess is they asked too much and now they'll have to prove they can get around that before the Saints consider upping their offer.

Edit:
We had about $8.2m before the Jimmy tag. That $7m counts against the cap even if he hasn't signed it.

hopefully people view strief as a bad RT (I mean kiper ranks him as a "D" in FA iirc)

he comes back for like 2-3mil/yr for 3 yrs finishing his 7th round pick career as a saint

We still don't even know if Graham will be considered a TE or WR, as far as the tag goes...

I think we will agree to a deal with Jimmy, which is why he hasn't filed an appeal on the WR/TE designation. I'm lukewarm about this... That's going to be a lot of money.

I'm all for younger players...

Jenkins / DLP / Strief ....BYE.

Look at the tackles in FA. It's a buyers market.

Strief isn't a top 5 FA tackle. Let him see what his value is, then he'll be asking for a deal.

Why would they extend him an offer before they can evaluate the market? Maybe they can get a better player for less than they were willing to pay Strief...

Strief is a solid to average starter, but wouldn't be impossible to replace in the draft with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. What really concerns me is that it's looking like we are dumping salaries to give Graham close to what he is asking. I just don't see us remaining in the title hunt year in and year out with so much tied to two players. Drafts will have to be near perfect.

I realize that we can't extend an official offer because of the cap space, but I am sure the team and Strief's agent would and could at least discuss figures of what they would be willing to offer once space is cleared. Maybe it's his agent twisting words, but I don't see this as just wanting to test the market. I see this more of him definitely being gone.

They know what they have in Strief and not some body coming in as a FA.
Also Strief rated as a top RT last year.

Because that's what happens when a team has a FA that they want to, and can keep? So they can work out a deal before he hits FA and another team offers more money? Like I said in a previous post, the team can't make an official offer close to Strief's perceived market value, but that doesn't stop them from discussing numbers.
