These things sometimes look like real cigarettes.
Of course, the film industry in LA is free to continue to use cigarettes in movies and tv shows for public consumption.
The state owns your health.

Question for the board: How many e-cigarettes would it take to equal the amount of harmful chemicals emitted by a bus owned by the City of Los Angeles?

The Los Angeles City Council voted on Tuesday to ban the use of electronic cigarettes, also known as "vaping," from restaurants, bars, nightclubs and other public spaces in the nation's second-largest city.

Public health experts fear that vaping, which has recently gained popularity among teens and young adults, may serve as a gateway to smoking for the uninitiated.
Critics also point to potential harm posed from second-hand vapor from e-cigarettes, saying too little is known about the effects of the chemicals contained in the cartridges.
"We have an obligation to protect the workforce from the effects of secondhand aerosol exhaled by people who choose to 'vape' on e-cigarettes," said City Council member Mitch O'Farrell, who co-sponsored the proposal.
"We also have a responsibility to protect our youth and everyone else in public places from the carcinogens found in the ultra-fine particles in e-cigarette aerosol," he said.
The proposal was opposed by the makers of e-cigarettes, who pitch their product as a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes and say there is no evidence that second-hand vape smoke is harmful. Advocates of e-cigarettes also say they can help smokers kick the habit.

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these things pretty much eliminate the 2nd hand smoke issue.... Which is the reason that cigarettes were initially being banned from bars and restaurants???

But they look like cigarettes!

And thats what I'm getting at... Is that the reason? The article mentions the likelihood for young people to use them since they see others doing it.
Really? So now were moving the goal posts
I absolutely cannot stand smoking. I hate being around people who smoke, but am completely find with the vapor cigs.

Just when I thought liberals couldn't get any dumber.
There is no secondhand smoke from e-cigs. It's water vapor.

Anyone else feel like starting a petition to force California to secede from the Union? Good gracious. The big earthquake can't come soon enough.

They should have cited water vapor as one of the prime global warming gases while they were discussing it. A device that "looks like something else" is a dangerous thing to display in public.

Good old nanny state. Big brother forever protecting the people from something that could happen.

LA wasn't the first city to do this. E-Cigs are banned from all bars and restaurants in Monroe. They aren't banned from all public spaces, but they are from government property.

I remember those things. - it took some skill to get them to dangle from you lip without dropping off.
Also used the boxes to curl up in our t-shirt sleeve ala Marlon Brando.

Frisco, TX just passed the same ordinance.

Nothing more than a feel good measure that's well intentioned but severely misinformed and doesn't quite work out in reality.

I don't give a rat's hairy butt what people ingest or smoke into their bodies, but I do not want your vapor at my dinner table.
That is all. Carry on.

The vapor wouldn't reach your dinner table as it dissipates almost immediately. It also has no smell. You would likely not even know a person was using an e-cigarette near you unless you were looking at the person while they exhaled just as you likely wouldn't know a pot of water was boiling, releasing vapor into the air, unless you were watching the pot or felt the heat.
