So the Slingbow thread has me all pumped up about doing some night flounder fishing. Does this need to be done by boat or can you wade in from the beach and do it headlight style? Looking for hints. tips, tricks, or suggestions.

TIA

I've always used a gig and a coleman lantern. Wade out from the beach.

ETA: Make sure to shuffle your feet and not pick them up. A Stingray barb to the leg wouldn't be very pleasant if you stepped on one.

Don't walk. Shuffle your feet.

Oh, and don't gig your buddy's foot next to you (or your own).

I gig from my flat boat with led lights. Prefer an incoming tide. I use a boutwell bamboo gig pole and a cosson stainless steel gig head. Use my trolling motor or push pole.

I gig them, have a nice little spot behind fort Jackson in Buras. It's a sand flat on the river, it's about 2 miles long and goes out about 50 yards and drops off.

We usually use propane lanterns and a single barbed gig.

The lower the river the more we catch.

I always just carry it by the handle, it needs to be below eye level so you don't blind yourself. When I gig a fish, I always just slide the handle over my arm and cradle it in my elbow while I use the other hand to take the fish off if needed.

Lantern in left hand. Gig in the right. Get good pressure on the flounder so it doesn't slip out. Use lantern hand to tug rope and get pirogue close by. (Rope is tied around waist) Put lantern in pirogue. Then proceed with the flounder.

I know there are probably easier ways to do it, but this is how I've done it since I was a teenager.

Underwater lights are exponentially better than lanterns. Also, we designed a gig out of a piece of stainless tubing... You cut one end off at a 45, crimp and grind sharp. On the other end, insert the point end of a stringer with a buoy into the tubing and then crimp it down so the stringer is stuck. When you gig one, you can just slide it onto the stringer without having to lift the point of the gig out of sand. We never lose one.

Not true, on those murkier nights, I still stick a few with underwater lights that would be impossible with lanterns

I built a underwater light out of PVC Pipe and an LED Bulb from Lowes using this web page as a build guide.

LINK

I power it with 8 AA batteries using the adapter linked below. It will fit in your pocket and power the light all night.
