Is Bose pricing due to its name nowadays or are their speakers still better?

I am on the market for a sound bar and a small bluetooth speaker for portable/outdoor listening. I see reviews like Jawbone and Beats indicating their quality is on par with-if not superior to-Bose. Yet Bose is far and away more expensive for both product lines.

What say the OT: is the price of the product based on quality, or is it over rated based on a name synonymous with quality that has seen the field catch up to it?

What do you mean by nowadays? This somewhat implies it once was.

They don't like Bose in the OT.

Bose has some decent products, but home theater is not their forte.

Its quality was never superior to similarly-priced other brands. Bose is the best at advertising. That price is reflected in its speakers- which have always had poor low end and a high-mid cutout. Some people like the sound. Most that listen to other stuff I have talked to do not.

Beats is very similar. Neither are "bad" products, but you can nearly always find something better for the same price. What's your rough budget?

I got a pair of the noise canceling headphones as a graduation gift. Not what I'd pick out for myself but I use them hours a day and love them.

I don't mind paying for the Bluetooth quality. So budget isn't an issue there. But the soundbar is maybe half what Bose is priced at, which is $1,300 or so...

Check out the Bowers and Wilkins (or B&W) Zeppelin Air if you can use airplay.

For pure Bluetooth, be sure to give listen to the Boston Acoustics mc100 and Marshall stanmore as well as the Sony Sony SRS-BTX500 in addition to the ones you are considering.

Bose speakers sound good to some people, but they are generally not accurate. They throw out certain frequencies, among other techniques, to alter the sound of recordings.

There are much better speakers out there.

Bose and Beats by Dre sell because of the name on the box, not the product itself.

Yeah I saw that Zeppelin and its total crap. I need something portable and that I can use in outdoor settings. This doesn't look like something I can set by the pool or grill...

Look at the TDK Life on Record line. I have the two speaker jambox and it's really great.

It may not fit your application but crap is one thing that B&W does not make.

Bose on the other hand...

The design of the product is ridiculous. It's aesthetic is absolutely horrible. I like contemporary, but that's just incredibly poorly designed. The sound may be great, but that kills it for me. Design matters. I need at least a passing thought towards portability and mobility, which I've said several times now.
