Ny old one crapper out, so I'm looking to replace it with a Depth finder/gps combo. What is a decent one for under 500$? This is going on my 17' Xpress

Powpow has a humminbird 587 something or another. It's pretty fancy.

ETA: pretty sure he paid under $500 for it

Fresh or saltwater? There is a difference in the transducers along with mapping. Oh, $500 is not going to buy much.

If you can find one on eBay or amazon look at the Lowrance elite 5 dsi. Good chartplotter and fish finder.

Always the case, the Elite 5 seems like a nice unit. I have a Mark 4 on my trolling motor that works well and is pretty cheap. Upgrading the console unit to a HDS 8, cant wait for that to come in.

Where are you fishing?

The available maps for a given machine are just as important as the machine itself.

If the map sucks, the machine becomes much less useful as a gps.

The Lowrance HDS series supports the Standard Mapping eCard. I think I read that the Elite 7 does also. The Standard Mapping eCard is the satellite photo map that most people use for LA marsh reference, that is overlayed on the base map of the machine.

When you look at a machine in the store, dial up a view of some obscure area that you usually fish and see what it looks like. See if it looks like water or land.

The features are fine but the mapping software is terrible. 75% of the marsh we fish shows up as land. We just have to use printable maps in addition to the GPS mapping software.

Can you define superior mapping?

Maybe post some pics of screenshots in some known marsh areas?

Although, we still don't know where the OP wants to use this machine.

I have no business interest in Standard Mapping, but I probably should as much as push their product.

From what I've seen, there's just nothing close for seeing where you're at in our changing marsh.

the garmin basemap is pretty generic, but their new mapping software (basecamp, which replaced mapsource) is tits. also, you can download a satellite image and use it as your map, which is what i do for wax lake outlet, for example

USTopo is a good map that shows the marshes pretty well, and there's lots of others

garmin is the standard for affordable accurate mapping, but their sounders are not up to furuno (for example) quality. just depends on what you are doing

OP says he's putting it on a 17' boat so i think we can assume he's going to be inshore

heres a screenshot

I can't see it that well, but it looks pretty darn good.

Any way that you can get a satellite image on your gps is key imo.

Is this a new feature on Garmin? I've never heard anyone explaining/selling this.

100% agree with this. I was disappointed in the mapping and wished I had chosen better.
