The wife and I take trips a lot, sometimes we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere...and I mean nothing for a hundred mikes in either direction.

I carry a few cans of random food with poptops.

Chef boyardee goes a long ways when there is no other option and it's 0 degrees outside.

We'll take a few cans and lay them on the defrost vents, half an hour later, warm meal.

If the temps are right, I always try to carry fresh fruit. If I have the time, we bring Boudin too.

Any random foods you bring on cross country trips?

Peanut butter and honey sandwiches are another staple.

Sitting in the hospital...I could murder some food right now.

I'm thinking sausage, white gravy, and biscuits.

Anyone got s biscuit recipe? Or a better sausage and gravy recipe.

Can't beat a ham or turkey sandwich. I love eating them out of a cooler while on a road trip.

I don't eat food while driving. Never have. I don't allow anyone in my car to eat while driving. Never have. It's called discipline.

I suspect, however, that Lucy has eaten some skittles in her car while driving because I find a few she dropped when I clean it.

Her punishment is a good spanking.

Has nothing to do with discipline. If I'm on a trip and can't stop long enough to sit down and eat a meal etc..., I'm eating in the car whether it's a pack of peanut butter crackers or a sandwich or a boudin ball or whatever.

I'll bet you're the kind of guy who walks out to the mailbox and opens your mail and reads it on your way back to the house.

I wait until I'm in the house. Mail ain't gonna change.

I burn my mail without reading it.

I'm all about utility and maximizing time.

I'm not a guy. Mail is on the house at the front door. Very little walking needed. I'm not waiting on an 8 hour car trip to eat something when I don't have time to stop long. Happens sometimes. My car isn't a collector's item. It's a car and it's cleanable. My house isn't a museum. I live in it. I eat in it too.

Why not just fly instead of taking 3k mile road trips? That will help with your time issues

Spoken by someone who just doesn't get it.

I've seen 38 states...can't say I've ever regretted a road trip.

The road trip is the point...seeing as much as possible of backroads and offroad areas is the point.

I was explaining to the guy above that it has nothing to do with discipline...if I'm 3-4 hours off hwy and a few hours to a campsite in 0 degree weather...we warm up some food and eat while driving.

I live in the country. Mail box is about 100 yards from the house on my street.

I drove from Shreveport to Chicago every year for 20 years. It's about 22 hours. I stop and eat in a restaurant. It's not that hard.

I'll bet my car smells a lot better than your car.

There's not always time to stop and eat in a restaurant, Zach. Sometimes I get little notice that I have to drive somewhere, so I can't leisurely stop at a restaurant and sometimes I just don't want to do that. I want to get to where I'm going. I'm not going to be hungry to keep a smell or crumbs out of a car.
I don't care whose car smells better than mine. It's my car. No one else has to ride in it if they don't want to, but if they do, they can eat something in it. It's not on the top of my list of important things in life.

I bet that Brookshire's fried catfish you buy for Lucy stinks your car up pretty badly. I'd rather smell the smoked boudin and boudin balls I pick up on the road.

Not to mention my 18 year old Bedlined 4x4 is smell neutral...unlike new cars.

Why is this an issue rather than talking about food you bring on long trips?

I don't usually bring food and I've never eaten canned food on the road. I usually bring peanut butter wheat crackers or breakfast energy type bar type things. Same stuff I bring when I fly and don't have time between flights to get a meal.

I don't take a lot of long trips in the car like you do. If I do, it's planned and we have planned stops for meals and break the trip up staying in hotels. I hate being in the car longer than 8 hours. That's not fun to me.
