Any thoughts from you engineers posting on here. I know a kid looking at internships and I curious which field is best right now.

I know the company is important but should he look at Nucor or Monsanto or Chevron for example?

Not familiar with the other industries, but an internship at a major oil company is a must if you are looking fir that 80-90k out of school salary.

Chevron (or any other O&G major, or possibly chemical company).

It's great for multiple reasons. It gives him the opportunity for higher salary right out of school (majors are hiring in around $90-95k now). It will also expose him to that environment, which is invaluable. He gets the experience in it, which will help in related industries (ie. EPC companies), but also help determine if it's where he'll want to spend his career. The industry pays very well with great benefits, but it's a daily grind. Not to mention the associated risks if you're within a manufacturing facility.

I worked as an engineer at Chevron for years, and it was pretty tough to beat for a big company. 9/80, good salary and bonus, lots of global opportunities and multi-billion dollar projects, and overall it is a great people company considering the size.

Same here - retired from CHVX in 2005 - people's company for sure - bonus and pay on level with any of the other big O&G companies.

This is unrealistic for a mechanical.

Average when I got out of school 3 years ago was around $62k. Either your friend lied to you or is extremely overpaid.

90 is not out of the question if he is doing PETE.

Most of the majors are starting between 80 and 90, and independents are often more.

Also, oil internship is not required for an oil entry job. However, all majors require at least a 3.0 and most won't consider below 3.25. Chemical usually has lower reqs, and I'm not sure about steel but I'd imagine its similar to chemical.

For all three of them, an ME is going to do the same types of jobs, except in oil where there are possibilities to do traditional PETE things

He was hired by a major that he had interned with before and had almost a perfect gpa. I'm not saying it's the norm but it is possible.

I'm an ME that graduated within the last 5 years. It is unlikely, but those jobs do exist. As an ME, you will need an internship to pull that kind of money. You will most likely be doing PETE work, but you can make that money. I had a sub 3.0 GPA and I made 70k my first year. Average salary has nothing to do with what salaries are possible.
