Saw an elderly woman struggling with her trash cans, stopped and assisted the lady with her cans and when the lady looked up at her she was sobbing. Told my SO that her husband just died and she is all alone. My Lady is now very distraught and wants to go see the lady to make sure she is ok and bring her a basket of stuff. Anyone had any experience with befriending a strange old person? What goes in the basket? Apple sauce? Crossword puzzles? I know to watch out for a giant goiter thanks to Seinfeld. But seriously... Any advice from the good Samaritans of the OT?

Sounds like your SO wants to do something nice for someone caught in a bad way. I see nothing wrong with that.

You seem so sincere. Bring the old lady some depends and some mothballs or something.

Sounds pretty awesome. People used to do stuff like that for each other

Maybe you guys should meet her first and then decide what to get

She probably just needs someone to listen. Nice of your SO to help out.

I'm sure company and a good ear would vastly outweigh any material goods

Conversation would probably be the best gift. It's possible that she's alone for the first time in 50+ years. Just tell your wife to spend 5-10 minutes talking to her.

Can't go wrong with a basket of muffins. I mean, who doesn't like banana-nut muffins? Besides, I'm sure just the fact that someone cares is enough regardless of what's in the basket.

You should go with your SO when she goes to check on her.

I think it would be a very nice gesture...

honestly, old people often feel lonely and like structure a lot...if you can set up a routine of visiting once a week or even calling once a week, she will really like that...probably would be cool just to go by and take her trash cans out at whatever frequency the trash is picked up...

as far as what to bring, nothing is really as important as the contact...but they like anything that is thoughtful or old fashioned...maybe go by the cracker barrel and pick up a couple of things that they sell...throw in a few pieces of fresh fruit and you will have a friend for life...

Everyone should leave each other alone and only converse on the internet.

This is how it's always been.

I think Spankum's got it right. She's probably just lonely. Kids probably grown up and moved away, no friends since her husband passed. I can see that.

I'd ask if she has any kids. Maybe she has no one in family. Just checking on her would make the lady's day.

The best thing she can offer is your help repairing things and cutting her grass.
