I just got a Nest Thermostat and thought I would share my thoughts.

I have had it for a week and I loved this thing from the minute I installed it. The installation was very easy. I don't know shite about wiring or home maintenance in general, but the instructions were simple and any person with a decent reading level should be able to do it.

My favorite thing about it so far is its ease of use. I am pretty sure the guy who was behind the iPod (not Steve Jobs but another Apple guy) was also the brains behind nest. When you plug it in for the first time it goes through a setup process like when you get a new phone or computer. It accesses your Wifi (if you want it to) and takes your preferences (i.e. what is the max low and high you want your home to be).

There is even an app for your phone so you can control the thermostat from virtually anywhere, and it is fricking awesome.

Just wanted to give a little bit of input for anyone who has been on the fence about getting one. We signed up with Reliant energy in Dallas and got it for free and it has been well worth it.

ETA: You can also create a schedule in the app to have it set for certain temperatures throughout the week. For instance if there is a coldfront coming overnight one day this week, you can set the schedule to kick the heat up a tad while you are sleeping. pretty damn cool.

I was going to put them in my next house, then Google bought Nest. I don't want google owned sensors in my house.

That's understandable. I don't really mind it if they do things that make my life easier such as the thermostat. Also I just read they have a smoke detector as well. A little steep in price for a smoke detector but still looks pretty cool. Does a lot of cool shite.

That I don't have a problem with. It's the selling of the info they collect to advertisers that I do have a problem with.

Their website says $249. It's an awesome device. If you have the money to spend on it, I recommend it.

I love stuff like this, I just don't think I'd be amazed by it.

Climate control in my home is not something I invest much time in, so I don't see how this would change much for me.

They don't sell the info to advertisers, they use the info to help them decide which adverts to show to who. That info is priceless, why would they sell it?

And it's the same thing all advertisers do.

Honeywell makes a Nest-like device but it doesn't look as cool. It's a lot bigger and rectangular shaped.

I have it. Been running it since Christmas. It said I saved tons of energy, but my bill has been higher because I know that's been the two months I actually ran it on heat.

I guess the key is setting your highs and lows and never touching it.

id like the nest if it allowed multiple thermostats or some kind of slave thermostat that would allow me to control temp based on the slave thermostat.

So the biggest difference between using the Nest and a regular thermostat is what, getting up off your arse? Not trying to be an arse about it, but at $250 bucks, the Nest seems a lot like the Dyson fans, cool technology that isn't a big enough upgrade to justify the premium cost.

I don't have advertiser built sensors in my house collecting and sending info currently. I'd like to keep it that way.

It was free and my old thermostat was a piece of shite, so yeah, easy decision. And it's not like getting up off the couch to go to the thermostat is a cardio workout or anything so what am I really missing out on by having the old one?

Love not having to get out of bed to change the temp. Good when having a newborn too.

I know someone that has one because they are physically disabled and getting up to mess with the thermostat is extremely painful. For them this thing is a godsend.

For one it doesn't annoy the frick out of you by beeping. You can simply wave your hand in front of it to get it to shut the frick up. Our normal one goes off every time we make toast. It's just a cool innovation of a common product.
