I don't have advertiser built sensors in my house collecting and sending info currently. I'd like to keep it that way.

And that's fine if you're paranoid, just don't act like all your precious info ("omg he keeps his thermostat above 72!") is going to get passed around to whoever wants it.

It's funny that I googled Nest because of this thread and now I have Nest ads everywhere

I was reading an article about the smoke detector and one example they gave was if it went off in the kitchen for some reason it would alert google and you might start seeing ads for a new oven or toaster in your gmail. just stuff like that

When you say you "signed up with Reliant Energy" does that mean you chose them for your electricity supplier - or something else?

Sorry, yeah we chose them to provide our electricity. In Dallas you can choose between providers which is nice. My folks live in Shreveport and they were amazed by that because they only have Swepco there. My parents weren't even aware that one could have a choice .

What the frick else do you need it to do besides detect smoke?

For one thing, it can sort of tell the difference between an actual fire and a little burnt toast. As someone else mentioned, you just wave at it to silence an alarm (as opposed to pulling the battery or actually clearing the smoke from the room). If you have multiple units, it will tell you where the alarm is (like, the other units will "speak" it to you, I think). And I think it functions as an automatic nightlight.

So, I guess you don't "need" it to do anything other than detect smoke, but if your devices can be more useful, why the hell not?

Thanks - we don't have that choice here, either.
Sounds like a good deal for you.

The website mentioned a statistic about lots of people losing their homes to fires and/or losing their lives because they become so annoyed with a low battery in the detector that they just remove the detector altogether, thus causing a big safety issue.

Would be pretty sweet if they would do that. Not sure they would risk sending that type of ad though in case the fire was serious and you actually lost a family member to a kitchen fire. "Need a new oven?" No, Google, I need a new brother, thanks for the reminder.

Maybe it will be smart enough to send casket or headstone ads.

The biggest reason I haven't seriously considered the Nest is the temperature variance. Honeywell thermostats have a +/- 1 degree variance. The Nest has a +/- 3 degree variance. IMO, that's unacceptable. I'm not going to overpay for a thermostat and have it have a larger variance in the temperature I want set.

Yeah, my problem with the Nest isn't what it does, it's what it does for what it costs. I would imagine that will change in the future but for now it's in the Dyson fan category.

Overall it's pretty good although I think my electric bills have actually increased.

Not to mention you'll be sitting on your couch with it 80F outside and the heat will come on b/c that same day last week was cold outside so it's still on schedule.

I cancelled my schedule and just schedule it manually now. The app is OT baller status though

Have those numbers been confirmed through independent testing? Yeah 3 degrees is a huge difference in your house.

From what I read, Nest sends information over the network that reveals whether anyone is home. So unless you trust the network and Google not to disclose that data - or you don't own anything worth stealing other than your fancy thermostat - you'd be crazy to install the thing IMO.

do you honestly think google has your local, neighborhood B&E guy on speed dial and they're gonna call him to steal your tv and laptop when you aren't home?

Seriously, if the big bad google knows if you're home or not, what exactly do you think they're going to do with that information?

What are they going to do with the information? And what if your wireless gets hacked?
