What is the official ruling on that play that occurred in the game last night? What would have happened if the coach had tossed the ball to his catcher to catch Bregman at home plate?
Would a SELA player have to go to the dugout to manually retrieve the ball from the coach in order to get the out at home? What if a SELA player had called timeout as Bregman headed for home? Would the run still have counted?

it was a live ball...i would think coach touching it is basically interference.although they ruled it as an error on the catcher.

The catcher threw a live ball into the dugout, therefore the runners on base get to move up. As soon as the coach touched it, it was ruled dead as if it entered the dugout. There was nothing SELU could do after that point. The catcher just had a brain fart.

I missed what happened... some details? Why would he throw it in the dugout?

There is no timeout in baseball. Once the ball is thrown out of play the play stops but the runners can advance to the next base.

Pass ball. Run scored. Instead of calling time and switching out the ball with the ump, catcher just throws it to the dugout and the coach picks it up. Another run comes home.

passed ball.. when the catcher went to retrieve it, the runner at 3rd came home.. play kind of stopped then the catcher rolled the ball towards the dugout and the coach picked it up.... no one had called time so the play was still live...bregman, having moved to 3rd, came home while the coach held the ball in his hand.

chaos ensued

not like a timed thing in football or basketball, but you can call time to stop play

yes, but not on his catcher. on the ump. Who knows why he was arguing. He might be stupid too.

No, actually it was still a live ball. That is the reason the runners kept running.

I mean, even as a kid you'd look at the ump and show him the ball like you wanted a new one and he'd throw his hands up and he'd either have one on his hip or he'd call for one from somewhere... you didn't just throw it to coach and ask for another

I was under the impression the ball was dead and the runners advance. Compare to a wild throw from the 2B that goes in the dugout. Error on 2B. Runners get a base.

i really really wish the coach would have tried to throw Breg out (the pitcher was covering home).

I would imagine once the coach touched it was in fact dead at that point.

No, I don't think they ruled it the same way as that. It was more along the lines of an OF catching a ball, thinking it is the third out when it's really the second out and flipping it in the stands. That ball is live. Not sure exactly what moment the play officially came to an end, but the coach just kind of walked towards home plate with the ball still in his hand.
