Is University Edge Apartments safe for a 19 year old female student?

My friend's daughter is considering it but the area of town seems like it would be really unsafe for her. Anyone have any insight? TIA

The hook is showing....or is it?

It might be perfectly safe, who knows. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the place was the developer must not be from the area.

Drive by it, then make your decision.

IMO the Weinerschitzel on Highland is the border between safe and not safe and I use that marker for Nicholson too (although it's a little more of a grey area) So in this case the answer would be no.

University Edge apartments are definitely in the middle of the hood and would be a terrible place for your friends daughter to live.
A few weeks ago a drug deal went bad happened there and a couple guys got beat up and some guy jumped out of his 4th floor window to escape.
The apartments themselves are nice but it's right in the middle of the ghetto. I know someone who works there and as of last semester they were barely at 50% capacity.
I'm convinced LSU or someone in the know had to give them money under the table to build there to try and force the "ghetto" out and to try and make the area more student friendly. As of right now it is not student friendly and I wouldn't live there if someone payed me too in all honesty.

Thanks Dr. Shultz. I sent your comments to my friend, who would be the one paying the rent for his daughter.

Look on the south side of campus. Boyd/Parker is a good area. Besides El Cid

Tell your friend to get his daughter to live in the Cottages or The Woodlands. They are also in the process of building another apartment complex over there called The Exchange which looks like it's going to be nice as well. All of those are in the same area and very student friendly. There is nothing else on that road besides those 3 apartment complexes and they are probably 99% students.
If they are packed try getting a townhome or house to rent and Lake Beau Pre.

There are decent ones around the North Gates. I don't know the name, but the one just North of Jack In The Box was fine a few years ago (Campus Crossing?). As was the place next door (Northgate something?). I have many fond memories of University Crossroads too.

Aster IMO.
But yeah, I have no idea what that developer was thinking.

My friend nixed the idea after I shared with him the article linked and the comments in this thread.
Thanks for other suggestions. I will pass them along.

I wouldn't send her there
As said prior, Campus Crossing Highland and the Venue are both good on the north side, but expensive. The Boyd/Parker area is great (that's where I live). Ben Hur area (The Woodlands and The Cottages) and Lake Beau Pre are also awesome spots if you're fine with having to drive to campus every day.

The Woodlands and Cottages both are on the bus route so they could take the bus to school.
Lake Beau Pre's are all by the levy so it's an easy 3 minute drive to campus with absolutely no traffic every morning.
I have lived in Lake Beau Pre for four years and it sucks not being on the bus route for going out to the bars and stuff but it's great in every other sense because it gets the least amount of traffic and the whole area is very safe and relaxed.

Yeah... anything North of Roosevelt was considered the combat zone even back in the late 80's.
But it still baffles my mind that N. Roosevelt itself has never gotten a makeover like the old university shopping center has as it is walking distance to campus.
Until N. Roosevelt gets cleaned up that McKinely developement has zero chance of being successful as far as a college living venue.
