Is doing the right thing overrated or not a good idea?

Like for example what would life be like if we really told the truth every single day of our lives and say what really happened or how we really feel? This is rhetorical of course.

Discuss.

I really think that is a saying for past generations. You ever told a cop the truth nothing good comes from it. Turning in that bag of cash you found for a 50.00 reward. Saving someone from drowning and then getting sued for helping out. You see what I am saying here.

There's a short story about that called True Thomas. After a police officer criticizes a barrister for getting a guilty client acquitted, she bets him that he can't go for 24 hours without telling a lie.

I always tell the truth. Or say nothing at all.

"Doing the right thing" has consistently fricked me over and over again, and I'm sure it will continue to.

I guess somewhere down the line somebody will be talking about me and say "he always did the right thing"

Being brutally honest with your opinions is not necessarily ethically right.

Putting forth the effort to do the right thing really determines your integrity and character. So yes I would say it is worth it. (Although I'm not saying that I always live up to my own ideals.)

Really? I would say I have had exactly the opposite experience.

There's also a saying that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Sometimes you have to decide for yourself why you're "doing the right thing." Because doing the right thing doesn't lead to recognition as often as it should.

At face value I'd say so. I'm young though. And it bit me in the arse pretty hard today so I may be a little off-base today

there's a difference between doing the right thing and doing what is considerate of others.

never compromise your own ethics, whatever they may be

The things I did because they were "What you're supposed to do". The things that were expected of you, the safe bet, the parson's gamble...those are the choices I wish I wouldn't have made.

If I could do it all again,
I'd throw caution to the wind,
reclaim a misspent youth,
and take the chance I didn't then,

I'd leave it all behind,
The safety that was mine,
cut every single mooring,
sever every tie that binds,

Set off from my homeland,
dig toes in foreign sand,
for if I'd e'er return,
It would be as a better man,

But time once spent is gone,
One chance to see each dawn,
The safe path's not the one,
An old soul though that he'd be on.

Seems like this made since for our parents and grandparents. The values and morals back then were respected and upheld within our country now we got freeloaders and lazy asses that do nothing and do just fine in this once great country. Damn shame

that's fricked up.

I try to do the right thing, and in times I should have gotten screwed, I usually get lucky.
Like good karma I suppose

I'd say that doing the right thing when nobody's watching, there's nothing to personally gain, and perhaps something to personally lose is quite rare indeed. I think it goes on, but it's because of a personal committment rather than human recognition almost always backed up in real faith alone.

i just think that a lot of times when you do "the right thing," you end up looking like an a-hole because other people see things differently. i cant think of any examples
