I have never been so frustrated with an LSU BB team than this one. Coach Jones is a good recruiter, but can't coach during the game. So great, he is just like Les Miles. Are you kidding me with these blowouts away from home from crappy teams. And nice loss to RI at home. You can't go beating KY and then loose to crap teams. Something is way off. Please explain?

Les Miles has is pitfalls, but he gets labled as "only a recruiter" far too much. When have you seen a Les Miles team lose a game to a team like Rhode Island? When has a Les Miles team not been competitive in games with inferior opponents?

I know this thread isn't about Les Miles, but you lose all credibility when you compare a basketball team that will miss the NCAA tournament with a Les Miles team.

Basketball is also a totally different game than football, one in which there are a lot more upsets. I don't think there is much you can compare between the two.

Also, basketball is much more centered around reacting than plays. In football you read defense prior to the play but then you just run your play. Basketball you have to be opportunistic and take advantage of things outside the scope of a specific play.

To be fair, our defensive woes boil down to one of two things or maybe both:

1) the players aren't receiving the coaching they need on the defensive end. We don't do ANYTHING well on that end

2) they aren't motivated to play well on that end.

Sure, our offense is way better than we're used to scoring around 70 but we're giving up 80PPG now..

I'm not quitting on CJJ but he needs to hire an actual assistant for his staff to help these guys out

I honestly think we just need better players. I think at some point a player can't really be coached to be any better defensively. I'm mainly talking about our guards continuing time after time to allow dribble penetration into the heart of the defense. When it keeps happening over and over and over, at some point you have to just think they physically can't do it.

To be fair, there is a difference between lone upsets and losing constantly on the road.

When the played zone like they gave a frick. We killed. Now we're leaving shooters wide open for threes that they are burying. S hit the nail on the head on his thread

And I'm not feeling 100% confident in all of Jones decisions, but at some point you have to step back and relize that the sky isn't falling. It's not like we are the only team that is having trouble on the road. The home team wins 70% of the time in the SEC. Take out Florida and that % goes up a lot. There is certainly some blame to go to Coach Jones but I don't think we should say all of a sudden he sucks as a coach...

People were screaming a totally different thing when his tactics brought a win vs UK... Guys still have to defend.

I disagree. Since day 1, we have left 3 point shooters wide open. UK just missed the shots. aTm didn't miss them last night. I have disliked the zone since we started and I think people gave it way too much credit.

I agree, but almost every team loses games on road. It's a problem, but it isn't an LSU only problem. aTm, Ark, Alabama, LSU all have a ridiculous home/away parity issue. Im sure there are more than that but those are the ones that I think of off the top of my head.

I thought this team was a NIT lock all along. I'm starting to believe that they might not even make the NIT if they proceed to mail in the rest of the season.

A team that averages 5 threes a game went off on us last night. Most of their attempts were uncontested. Shocking revelation: SEC caliber players will make uncontested 3's. No excuse for that many uncontested 3's. We don't seem to understand defensive rotation and we aren't very good at getting through off ball screens. These two lack of fundamentals derive from one or both of two things, lack preparation and lack of effort. Finally, our reliance on the 2-3 zone is pretty embarrassing. A 2-3 zone is only effective if you have a lot of length on the top (see Syracuse), we don't. Rolling out a 2-3 may have been effective in the sunbelt, but it's not getting the job done in the SEC.

Jones is a great recruiter, but if he doesn't get some X and O's help, his tenure may be short.

In either case, when Mizzou doesn't miss, UGA doesn't miss, A&M doesn't miss, and Alabama doesn't miss, you have a bigger problem than just zone or going man. Teams are making it rain no matter what D we are in. Maybe Stringer and Hickey just can't defend. I don't know...

Several of those 3's came against players other than hickey and stringer. I know on one Martin got completely lost and then failed to get through a screen.
