Is there some sort of benefit to this or is it the hip thing to do to seem cool?

Cheap lifting shoes. Really helpful for people who lift with flat feet but don't want to shell out $100+ for a nice pair of lifting shoes.

You want something without an elevated heel.

I've been lifting barefoot. Chucks and Converse fit the bill with a 0 drop heel, though.

Saw a guy lose a toe deadlifting one time. Redwing steel toes for me.

How the frick is that possible? How could you miss so badly putting the weight down that you hit your foot?

What's wrong with an elevated heel?

It's the same as trying to lift with foam under your feet. Try deadlifting with 1" foam under your bare feet. You can't plant your feet firmly and you lose a ton of torque.

??
I knew a guy who also worked out barefoot, he also would bench with his legs crossed in the air so he would not be able to arch his back, had a weird grip too, I hated spotting for him.

I use an old arse pair of Chucks since they are pretty much flat. I do starting strength though so no high intensity stuff.

If you don't mind your ego getting hit by doing less weight, feet elevated is a great way to do bench.

You are wrong. Lifting with an elevated heal is in no way a detriment and depending on your flexibility may be necessary. All elite level Olympic lifters as well as elite squat lifters wear Olympic lifting shoes with an elevated heal.

Lifting with running shoes or something with a cushion heal is fricking terrible. Lifting with a solid heal like lifting shoes is beneficial

TheOxean why are you still posting? You should be banned

wear them on leg days for the hard flat bottom and calf exercises done correctly destroy my running shoes.

Actually I could be incorrect, but my OP was mainly referring to athletic shoes with gel heels. Flat foot lifters should never ever use those shoes. It's like lifting with 1" padding under your feet and doesn't allow you to plant your feet.

Go ahead and call Adidas to pull these off the market ASAP. Chucks are a cheaper alternative to actual 'lifting' shoes. No big deal if you blow them out. Squating and deadlifting in typical running shoes sucks.

Quality lifting shoes like Nike Romoloes have no gel/cushion and are solid flat surface simply on an incline to allow for proper trunk positioning. Try doing a proper chest up squat and keep your heels on the ground. 99.9% of people can't come close.

You lift through your heels and majority of peoe do t have the flexibility to lift through the heels and maintain proper chest/back position

I responded to your post since I don't understand why you are posting after losing a ban bet

then work on/acquire proper mobility. Don't think we're talking about Olympians here. If you're lifting your heels to make up for lack of ankle mobility then you're trying to build strength on top of dysfunction. Doesn't work, & you'll further cement the bad movement pattern. Even if we are talking about elite lifters, you should still be trying to improve that mobility outside of competition.

You can lose your balance. Also when your foot is flat you can bring a little power under you making it easier to lift heavy weights.
