Why go out to eat/drink at all?

Posts in the Barcadia about breakfast food being cheap and easy to make, cheap champagne and orange juice, etc. got me thinking.
Lots of posts on this board are focused ONLY on the food and drink and not the overall reasons to go out.
When my kids were young, I didn't take them to get pancakes at McDonalds because of the food. It was an outing. They played on the playground and the eating part was just secondary.
I don't go to a bar solely for the beer or martini. Alcohol out is the biggest ripoff in the world.
That's why I can have a good time going to a crappy chain restaurant, depending on the circumstances. I'm not going to choose one or go to one by myself, but the company or the reason overrides the food itself.
Every time we eat doesn't have to be a foodie event. For me at least.

Agree
But bottomless mimosas are the buffet of the drinking world.

Because I enjoy a good meal that I don't feel like preparing myself. Similar to a good beer I can't find at the local circle K.

The only time me and my wife go out anymore is for breakfast/brunch, usually on Sunday mornings. It's just easier than dinner with an 8 month old.
And I love breakfast food, but I don't always want to cook a large meal when I roll out bed first thing in the morning

I agree with you. I'll pay more for food or drinks most of the time because of the experience I'm getting. I do try to be a foodie most of the time though. And try to avoid certain places or sway the group to go to other places.
Like last night. Went eat with the parents and my brother. My mom wanted Applebee's. I tried to talk them out of it but the had a $25 gift card they wanted to get rid of.
Anyway, took FOREVER to get drinks/refills. And it wasn't our servers fault. It was management for only having 1 bartender making drinks for the entire place. Then took forever for food. My dad's sandwich came out a good 10 minutes before everyone else's dishes. Mom and brother's gf's steaks were over cooked (which is to be expected. I mean they aren't a steakhouse), my salmon was overcooked (again...you know). The only thing that was decent was my brother's baby back ribs.
In the end, we had an ok experience because we are a close family. But if they would listen to the foodie in me, we could have had a much better experience elsewhere for a little more money.
End rant...

Life, living it that is, is about experiences to me. I just don't enjoy wasting those moments in celebration of mediocrity or failure because the restaurant, owner, and/or back of the house doesn't have their heart in the game and is content with putting their name on the above meh food, NOT when there are better choices to be had.
Truth... Let's stay home, get together at someone's house and make something bad arse to eat, drink something really tasty, and have a kick arse time. If I die that night, would I really have chose the last moments in my life to be at Olive Garden? Is that my last chapter?

Did your parents pay for it? Sounds like they were trying to save some money and still have a family outing. If my mom offered to take me to applebee's I would be more than thankful, even though I don't really like the place.

I guess I just don't understand that reasoning because my Mom would never offer to eat at Applebee's in the first place when there are always far far far better options, so why actually choose sticky tables and chairs, microwave dinners, and crappy service as a place to spend with your mom? Don't I, and my mom especially, deserve better than Applebee's ? We can talk anywhere. Why can't or shouldn't it be with better food, surroundings, and service perhaps?

Sure... I'll take the lemon water, and eat when I get home.
And tomorrow, I will begin formulating my plan to save mom's palate from the abyss.

My mom wouldn't eat shite food, and she makes better choices with her money than that, no matter what the budget is. Thank God I don't have to be put in that position. One less thing to worry about in life.

I go to enjoy the experience and get a bite/drink while I am enjoying the company of others. While I am not a fan of Applebees, I would go and eat there without complaint if that is where my mom wanted to go.
As far as "people" being too cool for this place or that, just remember that this is an anonymous internet message board. People may be just a tad more "foodie" behind a computer screen than real life. I am willing to bet there are folks out there right now touting how they would never step foot in a fast food joint, while munching on their Big Breakfast from McDonalds that their mom brought them.
Stepping down from the soapbox now.
