Summary: got a book shelf...want to drill some holes or a hole big enough to run wires through

Question: what tool is best to use for this? Is cracking or splintering the wood inevitable?

Use a hole saw if you need too, nothing bigger than 5/8th's

sharp hole saw
might wanna put some painters tape on the wood before you drill to cut down on splintering

Use a new tapered drill bit and it will avoid splintering the cheapo wood they use these days.

But honestly...it's just a few splinters...not exactly hard to remove.

Use a wood drill bit. Drill through from one side only until the point of the bit comes through. Then drill through the other side. Much less splintering that way.

I say paddle bit as well. Usually cheaper than a hole saw

Paddle bit will chip a lot more than a hole saw. To really play it safe drill with hole from the top and bottom. Don't drill all tue way from one direction. Go about 50/50. The pilot bit will make it easy to align everything.

I'd use a forstner bit, if you have one on a high speed drill.
