Thoughts?

quote:

In the opening shots of a major new assault on the NCAA's amateurism model, an "overwhelming majority" of Northwestern football players have filed to be recognized as members of a union. Their endgame, if successful, would be college football players officially being classified as employees.

Outside The Lines has the first report of the filings, submitted yesterday to both the national and regional offices of the National Labor Relations Board. The pointman is Northwestern QB Kain Colter, and the movement is being shepherded by the advocacy group founded by former UCLA linebacker Ramogi Huma. Huma, who organized the "All Players United" silent protest in September, is also president of the College Athletes Players Association, the union that would represent the players if it receives formal recognition.

For now, CAPA's stated goals don't involve obtaining pay for players. It merely seeks better medical protections, and fully-guaranteed scholarships that cover the full cost of attending college and wouldn't be taken away if an athlete can't continue playing due to injury. It also wants to establish a fund that would pay players to continue their educations after their NCAA eligibility expires.

It's all about those obligations, which the NCAA has skillfully shirked over the years. The very term "student-athlete" was coined as a way to avoid having to pay worker's compensation to injured players. But if CAPA receives official recognition, its members will have to be treated as employees—with all the concomitant protections.

You beat me to it - plus way more clever than what I had come up with.

As part of the collective bargaining I would expect the players to play a full four (or redshirt five) years. No leaving early for the NFL.

This. If they are not looking for pay, this could be a golden opportunity for the NCAA schools to put the brakes on early departures.

dumb, they need to realize that they are getting the opportunity for a FREE college education. I do think that for football, basketball, and baseball players the scholarship needs to cover the whole cost of attendance.

Simple approach, tell them all to get in line to pay for their tuition with the union money. Northwestern is well over 40K per year. The union would implode in a day, maybe two. So much for the high standards of Ivy league level schools smarts in everything they choose to do.

Union rules:
Running backs will only be allowed to carry the ball
Quarterbacks can only throw the ball.
No night games without overtime.
Grievance Prcedure yet to be established.

So who gets what. How much does a Johnny Football get? How much does a Doug Planchard get.

Also, someone needs to let these assholes know that there are only two schools whose FB teams turn a net profit for the university, LSU and Nebraska.

I read that on this site.

But yeah, I knew I probably should have searched just to make sure.

But how about the first question? Who gets how much? How is it to be decided? Some schools make far more money than others, and some players are more responsible for ratings than others. I don't even know how you'd begin to try and come up with a formula for that.

What you were thinking of is only LSU & Nebraska receive no state support for their athletic departments nor require mandatory student athletic fees.

There is nothing FREE about the education they are receiving. The student athletes are trading huge amounts of personal time, extreme physical effort, and risk of serious injury for their education.

Free?

Tell that to those kids who go to practice, weight room, meetings,etc....30 hours a week or more.

They 'work' hard for those institutions.
