Looking for a 12 gauge shotgun for a teenage nephew... needs some advice from the OB.

I don't anything about shotguns, so should I get him a 20 gauge instead?

For ducks, bird hunting mostly...
Thanks!

Me personally, for a first shotgun, I'd go with something simple like a Remington 870 Express. You can get a new one under $300, or a good used one around $225 range sometimes.

One of the best shots I know started shooting a single shot 12.

His family was well off but his Dad kept the kids very grounded. He would take the guy Dove hunting and give him the number of shells in a limit and that was it for the day. If it was a 15 bird limit he got 15 shells. Probably didn't kill many for a few years but you don't want to stand by him today in a dove field!!

I also thought about suggesting an H&R single shot. Will help him learn to take good shots.

I'd still be pissed at my uncle today for getting me a single shot 12 ga if he had the option and means to get me a pump or auto loader. The kids' friends will give him ten kinds of hell when he brings a single shot to the woods with them.

Yeah, and the young man is a teenager. Might as well get him a shotgun he can use well into his manhood without him having to buy another shotgun when he gets more experience.

If it's his first, he doesn't need to be going off with friends until he's had ample time with adult supervision, at which time, an upgrade would become necessary.

There is NEVER a reason not to buy another firearm. 1st rule of gun ownership... there is always opportunity to upgrade.

First 12 gauge I owned was a Mossberg 500. I still have it and love it.

First 12 gauge I shot was my dads 870 and my grandads 1100.

My dad already had a few 12 gauges so that's what I got.

My dad says keep it simple there is no need for several shotguns all different gauges.

there is a lot of difference between one teenager and the next...how old is he and how big is he physically?....

Like other have said, I'd go with the 870. Was my first "big boy" gun, but in 20 gauge.
