Braindead mom, "viable" fetus, and a hospitals application of TX law

This was probably discussed when the story first broke, but there was an update this morning that makes the discussion more interesting, IMO.

Erick Munoz said his wife, a fellow paramedic, was clear with him before he found her unconscious on Nov. 26: If she ever fell into this kind of condition, pull life support. But John Peter Smith Hospital says it's bound by state law that prohibits the withdrawal of treatment from a pregnant patient, although several experts interviewed by The Associated Press have said the hospital is misapplying the law.
Munoz's attorneys, Heather King and Jessica Hall Janicek, issued a statement Wednesday describing the condition of the fetus, now believed to be at about 22 weeks' gestation. King and Janicek based their statement on medical records they received from the hospital.
"According to the medical records we have been provided, the fetus is distinctly abnormal," the attorneys said. "Even at this early stage, the lower extremities are deformed to the extent that the gender cannot be determined."
The attorneys said the fetus also has fluid building up inside the skull and possibly has a heart problem.
"Quite sadly, this information is not surprising due to the fact that the fetus, after being deprived of oxygen for an indeterminate length of time, is gestating within a dead and deteriorating body, as a horrified family looks on in absolute anguish, distress and sadness," the attorneys said.

Several experts have said the Texas Advance Directives Act doesn't apply in this case because Marlise Munoz, having suffered brain death, is legally and medically dead — a key argument in Erick Munoz's lawsuit.

Are you ok with euthanizing people just because they're disabled or deformed?

Why does Texas hate freedom?

The question is how viable is the fetus going to be? I really can't see the pregnancy going to term if there are already so many issues at 22 weeks. I am generally pro-life with health of the mother and rape exceptions being ok. But I think that there are other cases like this that are probably more humane than forcing a horribly disfigured and mentally handicapped child to come into the world to live a short miserable life. It's all around horrible,.

Since she didn't have an abortion before she became brain dead, what's wrong with thinking she would want everything to be done to save the life of her child?

Her DNR?

Exactly. At 22 weeks that kid isn't viable, I would argue that it's still too symbiotic to her body. I think that if the kid was 25 or 30 weeks there would be a real argument to trying to save the child but medically 25 weeks is the current cut off for our technology.

There are tons of documented cases where doctors said babies were going to be born abnormally only to find out at term the baby was perfectly healthy.
Hell, wasn't Tim Tebow's mom told to abort because there was "no way" he would be normal nor survive?
Who is to say what is really going on in this situation. Funny how liberals always want to err on the side of innocence except for the unborn.

How much money will the state spend to keep this deformed retarded baby alive? And for what purpose?

maybe to be a symbol of hope for other families in this situation. Maybe so something good can come of it so killers like you think about something other than money and hardships YOU might have to endure. There is no "eight" answer at this point, so why not wait and see how things develop?
Rmemeber, a regard doesn't know he's restarted because he has never experienced anything else. He just knows he's alive and happy to be so, just like you

out of curiosity, if the baby turns out to have issues, are you ok with the state paying for its upbringing?

The better question is why does the father want to murder his baby !!!

So you want to leave a child in what basically is torture so "something good can come of it".
And yes, I'm a "killer". I've killed dogs because they were in intense pain and had no hope. I care about people more than dogs so why wouldn't I be as compassionate for a person as I am for a dog?

I'm pro-life, but this is not what is happening in this situation. The baby doesn't have a chance and if it is carried to term will suffer through a very short life. This is nothing like Tim Tebow, the mother is legally dead.
You don't have to be Sarah Silverman to agree that he should be allowed to pull the cord and attempt to move on with his life.

He lost the baby he thought he was going to have when his wife died. As someone said already. If she were 30+ weeks pregnant that is another story. But when she died that child was well under 20 weeks. And now with the ultrasound report??? Just horrible all the way around.
