A good friend of mine who got laid off awhile back falls into the group that is currently not receiving benefits due to the extension not having passed a couple of weeks ago. Now DC is on vacation for a week. I hear the next vote won't be till the 28th. This has to pass at some point huh? He is starting to bug the crap out of me for money.

Why? Hasn't there been several extensions already?

So he wore out the entire extent of his unemployment benefit because he was just assuming that DC would extend it even longer? I haven't kept up on any unemployment policy talks the last few weeks, so this isn't necessarily meant to be a flame. Is that the situation; did I understand you correctly?

Typical response from a Mississippian.

So the friend went through the usual 26 weeks.

And the extension took him to 99 weeks . . .

What the hell has he been doing for 99 weeks?

Your callousness is unbelievable. You twit. You don't know the guy's story at all. Maybe he is too proud to take some crap job at a food joint.

But not too proud to take a government handout?

Of course.

If I have to do something that is uncomfortable = bad

If I can have the government take money from other people at the point of a gun and give it to me = fine

Unemployment is not welfare. Most people collecting it were working for many years and then lost their jobs.

What's a government's overall purpose, in your opinion?

The government is there to lookout for and to serve its people that created it in the first place. Somalia would be the likely alternative, which is an anarchist society.

Big question, but for the purposes of this thread it is not to save someone's feelings from getting hurt by taking a job that they think is beneath them, which was the comment I was responding to.

Most people on unemployment are older folks who are not going to get hired when they are a few years from retirement.

not my fricking problem if he is so worthless that this is the only job that will take him

over 100 weeks of unemployment is enough, "pride" is not a right

So let them pull from their retirement accounts and get a part time job
