You can get really expensive($20-30k) when you want a high quality rifle with grade A glass. My all time favorites, and ones that are on my birthday list, are Cheytac. I'm talking a 2500+yd gun

.338 lapua. It stays supersonic out past 1600 yards.
Shooting 1 mile out with a Savage 110 BA in .338 Lapua

I'd go with a 165-175gr 308 for 500. Still moving faster than 1800fps depending on load. Relatively cheap round and platforms to choose from. Past that I'd move to something else although 308 could still get the job done.
