Employer not very generous with the raises this year, most people i've talked to got 2-3%.

What's an average yearly raise for an engineer working in New Orleans?

Also, I'm a Civil Engineer 2 with 3 years experience, been with the same company since i graduated college. Will take the PE in 1 year. Whats an average salary for my level? $60K? $70K? $80K?

TIA

Depends what area you work in.

Getting your PE will get you a big bump. Most companies I have seen try not to give you a big raise until you get the PE. I am assuming they try to incentivize you getting it.

A Raise? Why would you get a raise just because of a new year?

~4% - Civil Engineering

Can't really complain since my pay has gone up over 50% in a little over 3 years.

Its pretty standard in the engineering industry. Inflation alone averages 1-2% per year, so if you're not getting anything, you're actually getting a pay decrease.

First job out of college.

Got a couple of promotions. Hot market has made employer generous in an effort to keep people from leaving to take better offers elsewhere.

Never thought I would be making what I am in such a short time out of college, but definitely have no complaints.

Have you considered talking to your employer about your pay and seeing if there is any room for a greater increase? If they seem unwilling to budge, it may be time to test the market and see what you are worth to other companies.

Yes, mention it every time i have a review with my supervisor. Has helped out in the past couple years to get me a mid year raise on top of the beginning of the year raise.

I plan to test the markets a bit after i get my PE. I know that I'll be a lot more valuable at that time and will have more negotiation power.

Out of curiosity, where are you at with your salary?

$60k? $70k?

Do you feel you are fairly compensated in comparison to peers in the industry? Have you kept in touch with college classmates at different employers and inquired about where they are at with their pay? This would help you judge where you are at in comparison to the market.

At the end of the day, you have to look out for numero uno. May not be worth waiting a year for the PE if you can get a decent bump by moving elsewhere.

I'm in that range, but not sure if thats reasonable as its a touchy subject to bring up with peers. Also, not sure what companies are offering new employees straight out of college these days. Just trying to make sure my employer is being fair and not screwing me over. I feel that i should be in the $70K to $80K range in the O&G industry.

You're right, i may have to start looking elsewhere sooner.

Hmm.. $70-75K

Its almost time for you to move. If you stay at one company too long, other people's salaries, who get hired after you with less experience, will pass you by very quickly.

I'd put some feelers out and see what your market value is right now.

If it's 15-20% more. Haul arse. If it isn't, it's probably best to sit tight and get your PE, and THEN haul arse for the big raise.

Thanks, that helps a lot!
