Question about Jeep Wranglers
Posted on 1/14/14 at 8:23 pm

Anybody have experience with the new ones? I need something with great offroad capabilities, but I would like something smaller than a truck that can get around in the city. I'm mostly leaning towards a wrangler because, of it's offroad capability, and I don't like a lot of needless frills on my vehicle, and the base ones aren't that expensive.
Also, will take any other suggestions.

I don't have any experience with Wranglers, but long drives in a Wrangler seem terrible. Why not a small truck?

If I didn't drive a truck, I would drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Gone up in price in recent years, but still, they are very high quality and very capable. Just my opinion...

I have a wrangler and as much as I love it, I miss a truck at times. I need both but I do not need 3 vehicles

My brother had one and it was in the shop about 7-8 times in the two years he had it.

Probably should have put this in the OP but I live in Pennsylvania and trucks kinda suck in the snow, and because of security reasons I don't carry anything in the back of my truck anymore so having the bed is useless.

I've got a 2011. Judging by your post, you'd probably enjoy a wrangler. However, a stock Jeep doesn't have a ton of offroad capability. At a minimum, I'd recommend a lift kit, minimum 33 inch tires and bumpers/winch. Budget about 5k for all that. Also, in real numbers, expect about 15 mpg in town and 17/18 highway. If you're still interested after that, give a jeep a try. I got the dual tops hard/soft and a spiderweb shade for top off driving.

If you know you won't ever need a truck go for it. I'd probably drive one if I didn't need a truck.
If you think there is even a chance you'll need a truck a Tacoma would fit your needs. They are probably the next most capable off road vehicle (certainly the most capable truck) and are also very easy to get around town in.

Find you a jeep Cherokee and add a 3"lift kit and some 32" tires. Very hard to get stuck. In fact, I never got mine stuck yet.
Grand Cherokees, well, not many aftermarket parts for them yet.

What kind of offroad capabilities? That is your main concern first.

I don't do any serious offroading, just need something to get my arse in and out of the majority of places that I would ever need to go, for hunting, fishing, camping etc.

This summer will be my third summer with my Wrangler and I am in need of a shade. I love not having tops on and such but that summer sun is a beast.

So Forrest roads? Do you need to do any type of articulating or just some extra ground clearance and traction?

this, regardless of make or model

It will work for what you want to do, but know that gas mileage isn't all that great for something so small.
Also, opt for the hard top option. (city)

I am thinking of getting rid of my Tundra and getting a new 4 door. Anyone have one that has multiple kids? Curious how car seats fit in them.

Doubt I'll ever need any articulating.
Hard top is a must.
I don't really care about gas mileage, I have driven trucks since high school, I learned early on to just put in gas and not worry about it.
Would it be worth it to get the Rubicon package or just do the lift kit and 33" tires myself?

Hard top soft top combo if you can. The only time I use the hard top is November - January. I pull out my back seat and put on the hard top during hunting season. This keeps my gear secure and locked up.
Rest of the year the soft top is back on and up only if rain is expected.
