I have the standard gateway from Cox. LINK

The range for the wifi is terrible. Can I just hook up a better router for better range or do I have to get another modem+router combo?

Any particular router to look for under or around 100?

I tried to do a repeater with my old black and blue 54g and got worse signals. Speeds dropped to 1mb from a 25mb connection from only 50ft away with no obstruction but it was better than the gateway speeds at .7mb

Flash that wrt54g with DD-Wrt and try it that way. You can adjust signal strength.

I did the DD-WRT and that was the signals I got from the gateway. (1mb) I had to practically move my gateway within 10ft of my xbox and TV to get 14mb. (Room behind living room with door open and gateway on the floor trying to reach the hallway to get better signal)

Looks like this (Red is .7mb , green is 14mb )(Red with repeater is 1mb)

Buffalo's are very nice, but you're spending more for a little less. In that case anyway.
