Here's a question for the brains here on the Rant. How do you build a culture of winning team leadership, when the best and most experienced underclassmen are now regularly exiting early for the NFL? It used to take a combination of intangibles, like skill, experience, and being either a mature junior or senior to be considered a team leader. Those intangibles are becoming rare with the early departures. It showed this year on defense.

But the LSU culture seems to be shifting away from the old style of building leaders, to the new reality of early exit. Do we just let the whole notion of the importance of team leaders go and embrace anything goes? Or what? Ideas?

Go ask Calipari. He has to deal with it much more than LSU.

No one really has an answer on this topic.
At least I haven't read a logical one yet, and I've asked this question 2-3-4 times.
You get a bunch of sarcastic responses and people trying to make themselves believe its not a problem for LSU...that everybody deals with this, when in reality it's not everybody.
At least not at the rate we lose players.

Idk IMO it sucks.

but we've still had a number of "mature juniors" on the squad even through the early entrants. we've had 4th yr juniors like Minter, Sam, Mingo, etc., and true juniors who played extensively going back to their freshmen yrs (PP7, Tyrann, Reid, Vadal). mix that in with the 5th yr guys like Lavar Edwards, Brooks, Barrow, Elliott Porter, and I think we're ok.

I get what you're saying and don't think these guys leaving early is ideal, but I think the team has worked thru it fairly well.

Leadership usually comes from upperclassmen. due to our alarming trend of not having any, we are fricked for the foreseeable future.

I honestly think 1/9 did something to the players. Most, not all, seem eager to leave and start over. This will be the last class to have experienced that season. The new blood coming in has a lot of leaders in it and will bring the swagger back.

And leadership is somewhat simple. It takes one person to step and the team will follow. One person having the no quit attitude and being vocal and their actions on and off the field are consistent with what they say. That persons attitude infects the rest of the team until it becomes a philosophy. Winston was that guy for FSU this season (proven innocent in court). I heard someone speak on the radio how from day one he was in seniors' ears saying what he expects from them. That's a leader and obviously it panned out for them.
