2 bore

quote:

Among other weapons, I had an extraordinary rifle that carried a half-pound percussion shell; this instrument of torture to the hunter was not sufficiently heavy for the weight of the projectile: it only weighted twenty pounds, thus with a charge of ten drachms [270 grains] of powder and a HALF-POUND shell, the recoil was so terrific, that I spun around like a weathercock in a hurricane.

I'm addicted to the 17's , and love shooting crows, coyotes, and predators

I own rifles chambered in 17Ackley Improved, 17 HeBee, 17 MkIV, and my own cartridge design : 17 Little Nasty

How does one create his own cartridge?

I shot benchrest matches for several years as the 6PPC is arguably the most accurate cartridge from 100-300 yds. Lapua 220 Russian brass, Vihtavuori N133 powder, and Berger 68 gr bullets were my "go to" products for 1 hole groups.

Since I had a fascination with small calibers and precision accuracy, I used the same combination but on a smaller scale. I took the Lapua 220 R parent case and reduced the overall length -.180" and necked down to .17 caliber.

I still use N133 powder (21.5 grs) and Berger 25 gr match bullets which yield @ 4050 fps.

here are several groups ....I have 3 different rifles chambered in 17 LN
I know of 12-15 other shooting buddies who also have rifles chambered,in this same cartridge

15 lb. groundhog shot at 375 yds .... note the small cartridge. The GH barely fit in a 5 gallon bucket

Do you reload these or is there somewhere you can buy these rounds commercially? My grandfather gave me his Sako and I never got into reloading so have no more rounds for it.

I reload for all my rifles and have dies for the 6PPC. By any chance did you save the fired brass ? If so, how many pcs. of brass do you have ?

I'd gladly help you out and reload some rounds if interested.

Custom Cartridge Company sells factory loaded ammo - 20 rds. $60.00 (www.customcartridge.com). Norma makes 6PPC factory ammo but it is pretty hard to find. I'm pretty sure your Sako rifle has a 1:14" twist as you'll be limited to bullets weighing 70grs. or less.

Midsouth sells Norma unfired 6PPC brass for $25 / 20 pieces , they are sold out right now . The 220 Russian is the parent case for the 22 and 6 PPC cartridge , and Lapua brass is often available and priced around $90 / 100 pieces.

FYI - the 220R neck is expanded to 6mm, custom loaded, then fire-formed to result in the PPC case

bullets are priced around $25-30/100 , and powder is priced around $30 per pound. 7000 grs per pound as you could get approximately 241 reloads from a pound of powder (28-29 grs for the 6PPC)

Can you only load this rounds with Vihtavuori? I would imagine these factors could change if your ran a Hogdgon or Winchester powder, granted I know the Vihtavuori is the best.

N133 can also be used with the 204, 222, 223 , 22-250

I'm familiar with Palo Alto but never shot there , several of my friends shoot 600 yd F class

I guess I should've specified.

What I'm saying is, that charge weight is specific to that round you handloaded. So if you used a different powder and used a different charge weight, you could get more than 241 reloads from 1 pound. That's all I'm saying.

Yeah, i have this plus some unfired brass. Have to go look in my storage unit. I may even have kept the dies for the 6mmPPC and my .257 RobtsImp. Gave away most of the reloading equipment years ago.

Blaze, I was looking at getting a 22-250 for plinking and shooting hogs, crows, etc. What's your take on the 22-250 as a plinking rifle. I don't reload and wanted a caliber that ammo was relatively easy to find. I have a Marlin .17 model 917 and kill hogs and such with it. Just wanted something with a little more pep behind it.
