Peter King makes an interesting suggestion in his column today. Check it out:

quote:

Brees turns 35 Wednesday. The window’s closing. It’s not closed. But if I were GM Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton, I’d be thinking about drafting a quarterback, and not just a seventh-rounder for third-string purposes. Denver and New England don’t know if Brock Osweiler and Ryan Mallett will ever play significant snaps for them, but those teams know that when old quarterbacks are nearing the end, the position’s too important to wait until stars are gone to worry about a succession plan. Brees was still very good this season, a top-five quarterback, and he could give the Saints three or four more very good years. Look at Peyton Manning at 37 and Tom Brady at 36. But LAD—Life After Drew—is coming, and if an Aaron Murray is there late in the second round as he rehabs from knee surgery, Loomis has to think about it

Not only do I believe Loomin needs to think about it, I think he should do it. The past 2 seasons I have wanted us to draft a QB in the mid round range for the future, and now I am on board with a 2nd rounder for a player that will most likely drop due to injury. Brees is great, and I hope he plays at a high level for the next 4-5yrs. I also know that the prognosis of that is completely undetermined. We need to be prepared at the most important position on the team, and this may be the way. Draft with the 2nd, monitor his injury preseason, make backup if good, IR him for a year if not and run with Griffin for '14. I can see this being our starter in '16.

UPDATE: I do not follow much college ball, and I am not familiar with all the players. I start reading and researching prospects this time of the year, and I read King's article believing that Murray was a high grade player dropping due to injury. I should have known better, and I hold myself fully accountable for believing King knows what he is talking about, because he's usually an idiot that talks about coffee, his daughter's fingerbang team, how guns are making people mass murder maternity wards and how the Redskins are indian rapists. I will be more careful with future readings and research. Mea Culpa

I would wait another year. And I would really like a QB with more size.

david fales is a better 2nd round prospect for us but we need to get better as a team with our 2nd round pick, not develop a dude for 3 yrs from now. Especially qb's that may not be better than RG4.

Yeah, isn't second round kind of high?

And I don't know if Murray is "the guy". I'm all for drafting a QB in the next year or two, but I don't want it to be a high pick unless we know he is "the guy" we want taking over for Brees.

I totally agree, Brees can't play forever. I don't know about Murray though, I seen too much of him, I don't thinks he's starter material.

I think it could be smart to start training him early. The packers did that with Rodgers and Farve and the moment Farve left Rodgers came in and tore it up. There wasnt much of a rebuilding process i think thats a good idea

It depends on how high the team looks at Ryan Griffin, but I think a 2nd is too high regardless. The team is a few players away from being in the Super Bowl next year, and a 2nd is too high for a QB, much less Murray. We signed Griffin to the roster to prevent St. Louis from signing him, so they must like what they see from him so far.

Not to take away from the topic at hand, but I thought this was interesting as well

I agree with King. Could we use more depth inside? Sure. But I don't see why ILB is being talking about as a top priority.

I only trust Peter King when he's writing thrilling updates on his daughter's field hockey games or covering the Washington Redsk-- er, professional football team

I did not follow college ball this year, so I really don't know value of particular players. I'm not sold or unsold on Murray, but I researched him after reading King's statement and like what I saw. If he is projected to go in the 4th, then so be it; take him there. If there's a better prospect in the 2nd, then take him. My main contention is that we are now on borrowed time with Brees, and each season will become a 'how will he fair' campaign. I don't like the idea of not having a future starter ready to step in for our QB who will be in his upper 30's. We need to be prepared, and each season he gets closer to 40 creates all the more urgency.

I'd be ok with us taking him in the 7th. Maybe.

speed. Hawthorne and Lofton are slow and have little range. They are great plugging the middle, but they struggle in coverage and getting to the edge. If we go to the 3-4 next season, then either of these two would fit the thumper role, but we still need a rangey guy for the 2nd ILB spot. For our 4-3 allignment, these two are too slow

There's more important holes to fill with the second rounder.

Green Bay is thankful their GM didn't follow this line of thought back in '05.

I agree that ILB could be upgraded, but it is far from out weakest position going into the offseason. If you include our neesd from this season with our own guys who are going to be FAs I'd list (in no order) WR, CB, RT, C, FS, OLB all as bigger needs than ILB.

I don't notice the 'speed' issue with Hawthorn like I see it with Lofton. Last year I wanted him gone but I liked what I saw from Hawthorn and contracts say they both stay for another year if I remember right.
No doubt bringing in competition for depth will be a priority. Humber, Herring and Reddick need someone to push them.

So we need to take another small qb becaus Brees is short? Why Murray?

Rodgers was absolutely the exception to the norm lately. Rodgers was thought to go one overall for awhile and then free fell 20 something spots. He was tremendous value. We've had relatively few draft picks the last few years...which is why we're up against the cap right now. We don't have that plethora of cheap young talent some of the other contenders do. For fricks sake, we're paying Brees 20 m per year, we better be getting early round guys at other positions who are contributing .....not waiting their turn.
