Need to pick one between the two, or does it pay to get both?

I think HBOGo is a great reason to get HBO because you have On-Demand access to all of the aired episodes of great shows such as Game of Thrones, the Sopranos, the Wire, etc. I don't have showtime, but I assume they have some sort of equivalent to HBOGo.

Never had HBO, but hear good things about a lot of their shows.

Shotime was a lot better when Weeds was ongoing. They replaced that with a couple 30 minute shows that I don't find entertaining. They do have Homeland though, which is my favorite show of all-time. Shameless is good as well. But those two are really the only two shows that are worth a frick anymore. If you HAD to choose, I would probably go HBO. You can always catch the Shotime shows on the internet with a stream. Couchtuner.com works great, and has literally every show.

lately I have been watching showtime more, the newer shows on showtime have been better overall than hbo imo.

HBO is more top-heavy. House of Lies and Shameless are shows I watch, but don't particularly look forward to like I do Game of Thrones.

On HBO, I only watch Game of Thrones. If not for Game of Thrones, I would no have HBO.

On Showtime I watch...

Homeland
Masters of Sex
Episodes
Californication
Shameless
House of Lies

I did watch...

That's tough. I personally watch more shows on Showtime than I do HBO but I'm not sure I could let go of GoT. HBOgo is also great if you haven't seen some of the classic HBO shows.

Opinions are like assholes.

There is no definitive answer here, so don't try and act like there is.

I'm not sure who you're provider is but typically you can weasel your way into convincing Cox to give you both for the price of 1 (for a year). Ask them if they have a "premium bundle" package.
