I am looking to purchase a Weatherby .308 for deer hunting. Does anyone have one and what are your thoughts on the rifle? I am looking at the .308 Vanguard 2. Any help will be greatly appreciated

EXCELLENT choice. Great value and extremely accurate out of the box. Thinking of getting one in .300WM

I've had a 270 for about 15 years. Field tested and proven. Great fun.

Weatherby's Vanguard line of rifles are made by Howa of Japan. As I understand it, the only differences are: Weatherby version has a barrel that's 2" longer and made by Weatherby; some minor dimensional differences in the bolt; Weatherby version finish is a little better refined.

20 yrs ago or so I had a S&W M1500, a bolt action rifle made by Howa. It was one of the most accurate rifles I ever had. I later sold it to finance some other purchase. Howa makes solid rifles, albeit not usually as fancy as some others.

Vanguard 2 >>> Vanguard (obviously)

My dad bought me a vanguard in 7 mag back in '00 for our first mule deer trip and I could never get decent accuracy. Finally this summer I had some work done on the scope mount, I put a timney trigger on it, and put a boyds stock on it to float the barrel. Finally getting good accuracy. Plus it looks better.

I have a Vanguard in .257 wby mag. It's more accurate than I am.

I had the vanguard s2 in 257 weatherby mag as well and that was the most accurate gun I've ever shot. Should've never sold it.

I own this gun in the wood version. Another of my favorites. I shot the woods up with it this last season.

prices

I picked up synthetic/blued .308 on sale at a Cabela's for $499. I paid slightly over $600 on Gunbroker for the "deluxe" version (upgraded wood stock) of my .257 WBY Mag.

Thanks everyone. I have only heard good things about these rifles and how light they are. I have found them in the price range of $480-$600

I gave $300 for mine new in the box with a box of ammo 4 years ago. Guy won it at a Wild Turkey Federation banquet and didn't want it.

As was stated earlier the Vanguard series is made in Japan by Howa.

The Vanguard is a good gun especially at the price point.

I'm a big fan of the Weatherby Mark V action but the Weatherby magnums and styling isnt for everyone. I own a 257, 300 and 416 WBY Magnum and the 300 remains my favorite. Its a shame they discontinued the Ultra Lightweight series as they were great looking and very functional guns.
