This isn't even up for debate.
August

August, not even a competition. The only day worth going to Antoine's for is Christmas Eve.

Two totally different restaurants. Antoine's hasn't gotten much love here lately and my last meal there a year or so ago was a disappointment. Out of those two, go with August.
If you want good old school New Orleans food, go to Galatoire's or Arnaud's.

This, Antoine's functions basically as a museum (or mausoleum) for New Orleans society.

August. Bring a nice bottle of wine with you to celebrate - no corkage fee

In terms of cuisine, it's August and it's not even close.

I'll be shocked if anyone seriously recommends Antoines if the other option is August. Hell, I'd recommend Popeyes over Antoines.

To echo what someone eles mentioned, if you and your spouse prefer old school New Orleans food, go to Arnaud's or Galatoire's.
If you like more modern cuisine, go to August.
But in no situation should you go to Antoine's.

I'll say this then batten down the hatches. We had a good meal at Antoine's over the holidays. The atmosphere was also festive and the crowd was dressed better than most places. Maybe it was just Christmas. Maybe because I also really like traditional New Orleans food (new style, too, FWIW).
Sure, august is "better". Sometimes a place just hits the spot, though.

It's nice to dine in a place where everyone is well dressed.
I assure you, this shouldn't be a problem at August.
The biggest disappointment I saw this Christmas was at Herbsaint. A local attorney(know in some circles) strolled in wearing black sweats. Guy was a complete joke.

Trust me, thats only over Christmas (although I agree with your sentiments). Over the summer, you have tourists walk in off the street wearing sandals, shorts, etc. Not to mention the gaudy types wearing hideous suits

Glass will be around shortly to let everyone know (for the 100th time) that some pictures of his family are on the wall somewhere.

No doubt people in mardi gras beads will be festooning the place the remaining 11 months of the year.
As for the attorney at Herbsaint, I long for the days when they would've simply thrown your arse out, and you would keep your mouth shut lest proving you really were a jackass.
