With the report of the Ferguson situation, I once again feel compelled to address the popularity of leaving early for the NFL. I understand the money involved, but I don't think some of the players understand that they could be out of the NFL in a hurry like Sonic Sam for example. It is the other side of the issue that bothers me. Ego has let down his team during the bowl season. To me it is an indication that he cares only about himself and money; we are very thin in terms of talent on the DL and might be again next year. We need to change the culture of the program and get our seniors to stay and to graduate. It is about LSU, not the NFL.

Sure they do. That's why they're trying to get money while people will give it to them. They can always go back to school to graduate. The NFL may not always be an option for them.

There are multiple threads talking about this. These guys have dreams of getting rich. They use LSU to showcase their talents and get to the NFL ASAP.

They didn't all grow up diehard LSU fans.

Excellent Point, unfortunately that is not the world we live in. Players will continue to put themselves ahead LSU because in their mind, they have already decided to go to the NFL. What they don't understand is that very few make it in professional sports.

How many of these guys do you think return to graduate? And again, what about the other guys on the team who have been let down?

i don't begrudge a player leaving early. but some of them that leave early are clearly getting bad advice; they leave early, do not get drafted and then do not have a degree to fall back on.

that is a waste for everyone involved. there needs to be a more effective way of determining a guys value at the draft before he decides. these guys that don't make the nfl have spent 3 years at college and are now on the side of the road. it's a shame and they are getting ready to realize there is no free lunch. not that ego won't make it, he prdobably will but a number of our guys don't.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong here

If you had the opportunity to start your dream a year early, would you have stayed in school? No, you would not.

I bothered to do some research. The average NFL career is roughly three years. According to SI and USA today articles, 80% of the players in the NFL have serious financial problems within two years of their retirement. All that glitters is not gold.

Its actually about the individual player. I'm sure some of the players grew up LSU fans but the old days are over man, putting the team needs ahead of your own is a foreign concept. Use LSU to get to the NFL, use the NFL to make money.

The free education is now. If they leave early, crap out in the NFL, the education will then cost them money. Money that they probably aren't saving. You really think that these guys are going to pay for school?

These players come to LSU for the same reason all the other students do. They are here to prepare themselves for their future career and put themselves in the best position to succeed in that career.

It's not about LSU. It's about them, and it should be.

If Shell were paying Engineering juniors 6 figure salaries to leave school without a degree and start their training from Shell early, no-one would begrudge that student for leaving the university, or say that they "owed" the university anything. But that's just because engineering isn't a spectator sport.

Remember, the NFL is using these guys to make money. I am sorry, but I am for guys like Dorsey, Whitworth, Kyle Williams, etc.

How dare he not choose to work for free so that his state institution can benefit!

To be honest, it is a wonder that any of the top-notch athletes continue to work for free after they have proven that their talents are valuable. It is an absolute shame that state institutions across the country collaborate with the NCAA/NFL trust to suppress the market for professional football.

You have got to be kidding. Athletes are treated like royalty these days. Free education, free food, etc. Many of these guys also get ethical or non-ethical fringe benefits during and after their careers.

This--

which is why I disagree so strongly with these guys getting paid anything beyond some kind of student worker equivalent wage while they're playing at/attending a university.

Until their team decides they are no longer needed; then it is all over.

It is so not about LSU.

How long did you want to stay/how much did you give back to the first company that hired you as intern?

That can happen in college too. Processed.
