All the pullup assists are the same, I'm sure. The pullup assist really helped me. When I did P90X years ago, I did okay with the chair, but you really can't get the form right or use all the right muscles.

The pullup assist allowed me to go from 3 pullups to over 26 in 3 months. The chair would have never gotten me there that quickly.

ETA: I still use it to this day on certain pullups

Yeah but the one on amazon cost like $20 compared to beachbody's $50 or something crazy like that

I did try the chair a couple of times, but I just couldn't get comfortable with it. I almost knocked it down a couple of times and I know I cheated myself more than I'd like to admit the couple of times I did do it. My leg(s) were getting a better workout than my back and arms.

That was my next question, if pull up assists work and if they're worth it. I know I could probably only do a few without one

Hmmm....You could do some core ab exercises, partial squats, calf raises, step ups. Going for a swim, riding your bike. I think all of these would help until your knee starts to feel better.

Can't get better than swimming. Works every muscle you have.

Does the pullup assist help you over time to complete more/get better at pullups, or does it only help with those who may not be able to do but 1 or 2 to try to get a few more in? I guess I'm asking what it actually does. When that Pam from the office lookalike on p90x uses the chair, it almost seems like it's doing all the work and takes a ton of the effort away from her actually pulling.

Also, does anyone else kind of shame themselves after a long weekend? I started '15 doing great but the last few weekends I've eaten pretty crappy and drank a shite ton of beer. Sunday night I always feel like I've undone the whole previous week.

Yes. It really helps with proper form and allows you to go as far down as you want without worrying if you can make it back up.

So regardless if you can do 1 or 20, it will still help you over time? I don't think I've ever seen one before other than the p90x videos so I was a little confused on how they actually function.

It gets you from 1 to 20 FASTER than the chair. However, I do admit, that since now I can do a lot of pullups I hardly ever use it. I only use it for some of the tougher pullup exercises, and that's only when I'm already pretty gassed.

Whether getting from 1 to 20 quicker is worth the money is up to you. Personally, I don't regret the purchase.

Ok gotcha. I certainly struggle in some exercises but I think in GENERAL I do alright on the pullups. I'll probably hold off on an assist. Also I just bought the blackmountain products resistance band set that someone posted in here like 30 pages ago and like it so far. Definitely gives me more options..previously I just had 1 heavy resistance band I somehow aqcuired like 5 years ago, don't even know where from. But a)it's nearly impossible to do some of the tough shoulder exercises with that heavy one and b)it doens't give me enough resistance on some of the arm exercises. I love how you can clip multiple bands at once on to get more specific resitance.

Bands are awesome. My only regret is that I went cheap on bands and they were a HUGE disappointment. I learned my lesson. I won't go cheap on bands again.

yes and yes. The assist has 3 bands in it...as things start to get easier you can pull the middle one and only use the support of the 2 outside bands to make it more difficult. Then you can put just the center one in and only use it for an even tougher assisted pull-up. Or, you can just keep doing more and more of the the 3 banded ones I guess if you wanted to. As to what it actually does...when you drop to a full extension it pulls the bands tight, so that as you start to pull yourself up the tightness helps to propel you up some. My soon to be ex couldn't even do a pull-up using the assist band...I think with all 3 of the bands it only gives you like 45 pounds of assistance or something like that (15 each on the red one) and I think there are even some 25 pound purple ones, but those don't come with it

I would absolutely prefer weights, but bands are fine for what I'm doing. Before I moved to my new apt in January my old apt gym had a full set of dummbells which I loved bc I could do more "standard" exercises like incline bench, etc. But I don't have that option now, I definitely am not paying for a gym, and buying dumbbells for myself would be way too expensive.
