I am sitting here trying to decide if this 7 point on camera is a cull buck or not. Club rules say anything that is 5 and 1/2 years old and less than 8 points is a cull.

Do the rules also state that you must be a wildlife biologist to hunt in said club?

Only on one side, bunch of ppl were line hunting and shooting everything that moved. We just bought the club last year and this is the first year of the new buck rules. If I shoot him and he isn't 5 and 1/2 I am done for the year so I am probably going to let him walk

With those rules I probably wouldn't shoot anything unless I was going to mount it.

I was told to look for 3 things.
Sway back
Big brisket in front area
Pot belly

That being said it's awfully hard to tell once out in the field. Good luck!

He has the sway back, but the brisker isn't well defined and no pot belly (but we had a high river this spring all of our deer are underweight) so I am going to play it safe and let him walk and shoot him next year

Can I ask how these deer are getting certified as 5-1/2 year olds? The only way to be 100% on that is the jaw and teeth. Shoot whatever and call bullshite on whoever tells you different. Anything on the hoof is an educated guess

Odds are they are required to pull a jaw bone, if they have age requirements

My advice is to let it walk if there is any doubt. Can't unshoot one.

I don't even think tooth wear is 100%.

Yeah we have to pull the jawbones out and once a week they send them off to the biologist we hired.

Google jawbone aging. Studies show they are not accurate. Only about 50-60% if i remember correctly.

Only proven method is to ask the deer
